With my Mazda 6 Sport Wagon, 3L V6, 5 spd automatic, I always use manual shift mode and always start in 2nd gear. I shift to 3rd & 4th before 2Krpm. When the trans is cold I manually shift to 5th before 2Krpm. When it's warm I put it in auto mode once in 4th and bring it back to 2Krpm where the torque converter locks and again back to 2K where it shifts into 5th. I coast (in nuetrual) at least 1/2 mi. to every stop sign and any time I see traffic slowing in front of me or a light turn yellow. I average 28.7mpg city and 33.2mpg highway.

My secrets to best gas mileage with my 2003 Prius were to simply drive at the speed limit or less and use the cruise control. Until recently. Your website inspired me to try the next step in ecodriving. My average mileage increased from 44 mpg to 50 mpg overnight. That's a 14% increase! To sum up what I've learned about ecodriving, I tell my engineer friends to "attain and preserve momentum as safely and cheaply as possible."

A couple of weeks ago, I've tried this : a 268 km (176 miles) ride with my Mazda3 from Montreal to Quebec City at "regular" speed and the other way around at the ecodriven speed of 90km/h ( 56 Miles/hour). Results: a 25% difference on gas consumption, I saved one gallon! See my post right here: http://www.tdicurious.ca/2008/10/montreal-to-quebec-city-in-ecodriving-mode/. You can also compared this test with a similar ride on a Jetta TDI Clean Diesel that my friend Louis-Alain did at a 103 km/h (63 Miles/hour) average speed. Result: a 56 MPG ride! http://www.tdicurious.ca/2008/10/quebec-city-to-montreal-tdi-style/
