Makai - '01 Echo 4D Auto
90 day: 34.45 mpg (US)

Mauka - '00 Echo 4D Auto
90 day: 34.5 mpg (US)

to try to answer your question:

it swells and then contracts

id just watch it and switch to viton if it looks bad
