I noticed this in images, as well.... Me thinks: Easy MPG gains for when the "real competition" (i.e. Prius) shows up.
Genius biz practice, but probably not very ecologically intelligent. If you could have just gotten the better MPG's earlier, you wouldn't have had the competition to begin with.
