As far as the seals go, just make sure they're not cracked, broken, or leaking. If you don't see fluid coming through them, and you can't visibly notice cracks or open spots in the rubber surrounding the shift selector lever (you'll have to move a rubber bellows), you're fine.

Basically, check that there aren't any fresh wet spots under the transmission where the axles go in, and where the shift linkage connects.
