Yar, that's what I did when I lost my cap. The "squiggly" cars signaled to me what happened. I took note of the next offramp and came back the next day (I lost it at night). It was white so it was easy to find off the side of the road. Bent up like a taco shell. I still have it on my wall as a reminder of my vanity (didn't get it for aero, got it for looks).
