construction adhesive (liquid nails) dries a little softer than your hot glue and should stick well to a cars plastic interior. Your hot glue dries out too much to hold the weight and fails from the vibrations. Being softer and stickier liquid nails should hold for a few years if applied correctly. Liquid nails should also snap off with some gentle prying and clean up with thinner.
