I use a strap wrench to REMOVE my oil filters, my HANDS to put on a new one. The O-ring gives enough of a seal with a little oil on it, and that is more than sufficient to prevent leaks. Good detective work, we finally solved this case.
In the future, do not use a strap wrench/torque wrench to put on an oil filter.
