I have a friend who was getting 65 MPG from a stock 2001 Triumph ST 3 cylinder. It comes stock with Electronic Fuel Injection. I was thinking this would be a great powerplant for a very low cd 3 wheel vehicle. I think the size was 955 cc.
You can get a used one fairly cheap these days.
