Maybe it's just compulsiveness, but I've just about always followed the 'severe' schedule ... as it usually covers most driving other than a salesman on the highway in a moderate, dry climate.
Hondas now come with an algoryhthmic oil chnage minder ... which I mostly ignore. I currently put 9-10,000 miles on my '06 Civic per year and change the oil 3 times. It just works out that way.
I've seen UOAs that have gone 7,000 miles or more on an oil change ... but they don't look so hot. I recycle my oil so I don't feel changing my oil every 3,500 miles or so is excessive.
