Looks life you have a good start by having the 5 speed version of the fuel efficient model civic.
I'll let the civic guys tell you about lean burn. And instrumentation i would consider to be important as having instant feedback on your mpg and an overall trip mpg to make fuel efficiency into a game to get the highest number. There is 3 main types of gauges to consider: Scangauge, Ultragauge, and Mpguino. The 1st 2 are standard obd2 gauges and the mpguino i've read reads your lean burn mpg correctly
