An old paper pushing old ideas, one by Ricardo that ethanol can be efficient, if you tinker enough with a gasoline engine designed & built to burn 100% gasoline(ethanol-free).
Well, the many hundreds of millions(more?) of gasoline engines, designed & built to burn 100% gasoline, are still at their best when burning 100% gasoline..... no tinkering or expensive or time consuming modifications need apply.
This is NOT rocket science, but it is good 100% gasoline engine science.
