where does it go

It will find the path of least resistance on it's own.
In the 1990s,Ford Motor Company paid around $68,000 for a scale model of a Taurus, with complete engine bay and Plexiglass hood.
They towed the model underwater in the Texas Tech tow tank, injecting dye at certain locations, videographing where the flow was under the hood.
Today, they're trying to do all this with CFD.Since the carmaker already has the point cloud for the entire car in CAD,they can export it into virtual-model software, which afterwards is sent to something like Exa's powerFlow for analysis.
Extremely complicated flow!
