Even if they were going to use either geothermal or other non-polluting electric power source to get the hydrogen through electrolysis of seawater, it's still too energy-intensive not just compared to BEVs and PHEVs but also to some alternative fuels that could be adapted more easily into the mainstream fuel supply such as ethanol, biodiesel and biomethane.
