It was a bit of a joke. The purpose was to make sure the 12V battery is kept cool. Under normal use it is unlikely to vent gas, let alone acid vapour.
Yet if it does fail catastrophically I can imagine you'd rather not suck it into the air intake - though the air filter would most likely prevent any damage to the engine.
