It's the total fuel consumed that makes the difference. To work, I used to take a longer route that increased FE, only to realize that it used more fuel per trip. To those out there in the FE bragging rights arena: use less fuel. Period.
On a side note, my Wife carpools and saves us loads on both fuel and vehicle wear-and-tear. I'm not a big fan of the co-driver's Alero, but MPG per person is what it is...
