You can check you have a compatible plug near the steering wheel : Which OBD-II protocol is supported by my vehicle? - Powered By Kayako eSupport. Mine is in fuse box.
The plug must be identical, as well as the pins. Careful : this is needed but not sufficient.
But 1996 is certainly too old for a European car to be EOBD (European name for OBD2). See : How do I know whether my car is OBD-II compliant? - Powered By Kayako eSupport
The simplest is to send a mail to telematica (European reseller) and they'll reply you quickly. See coordinates on the web site.
