I gained about 7 mpg (untested) since pulling the cat, but it was heavily soiled and 20 years old... it probably wasn't doing much for the emissions anyway by this point, and I got $80 for it.
When I get done with my CR-X, it won't have a cat either, but only because it will have individual carbs, and I'll be able to tune it using the emissions dyno (as long as my asian friend doesn't quit his job.)
