A tip if you want to solder:
Find nail clippers. They work GREAT for making minute snips in insulation without nicking the wires.
Also, if instead of using the side of the clippers to clip with, you place the front of the clippers flat against the insulation, you can use them to "gnaw" a starter patch open.
