My wiper arms are quick release, no tools, but I prefer to just leave them on. For yours, I would just scribe a line on both the arm and shaft, and carry an appropriate wrench for the nut.
A wiper cover might be something to try too, if you haven't already. With the mileage you're getting, you should be able to tell if it is helping or hurting.
