2011-02-06 330 10 $3.8 33 "This is not a real entry. It is just to represent the normal tank-to-tank combined cty/hwy average I tracked for years before finding this site. Beating the 2008 EPA standard by 3 mpg for 148,000 miles from 2001-2011 would mean about 425 gallons of gas. If I guesstimate $2.50/gal., I might have saved about $1060.00, but these estimates are so crude as to be kinda wild guesses, really."
2011-02-17 418.2 9.82 $3.8 42.59 "50%hwy/50%cty (estimated); tire overinflate 4psi; 53mph hwy speed; and no EOC. EDIT: the tires were actually overinflated 9psi (faulty pressure gauge). Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-03 431.8 9.54 $3.9 45.26 "Combined 45%hwy/55%cty (estimated); WAI introduced; 53mph hwy speed; and no EOC. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-11 405.5 8.54 $3.9 47.48 "Combined 40%hwy/60%cty (estimated); WAI modified for warmer; wiper delete added; 53mph hwy speed; and no EOC. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-21 412.6 8.739 $4 47.21 "Combined 32.3%hwy/67.7%%cty (actual); grille blocks added; mirror deletes introduced; increased hwy speed to 60mph from 53; and drove 68 miles EOC. At 250 miles I reduced the size of the grille block because the fan kept switching on. At 290 I removed the second outside mirror. At 350 I removed the front wheel mud flaps. The higher speeds on the freeway and in the city brought FE down notably. I expected speed over 55 would make a big difference, and so I compensated by beginning EOC. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-24 283.7 5.595 $4 50.71 "No new mods. Slowed down hwy top speed to 55mph. 65%hwy/35%cty (actual). EOC. Some drafting behind conveniently slow trucks. But cold and rainy conditions lasted the whole tank. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-26 224.1 4.295 $4.05 52.18 "75%hwy/25%cty (actual); No new mods, just lots of highway driving again; EOC; max speed 55mph; some drafting. Refueled for 400mi trip. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-03-29 354.2 6.171 $4.05 57.4 "No new mods. 93%hwy/7%cty (actual). Max speed 55 mph. EOC. Drafting. Last of the big highway driving for a couple months and so millage will come down again. More mods coming. Gas price estimated from memory."
2011-04-08 425.6 8.214 $4.099 51.81 "46%hwy/54%cty (actual). NEW MODS: Cut AC belt at fill-up; installed Ultra Gauge at 60 miles; removed power steering belt at 120 miles; Removed rear mudflaps at 225 miles. TECHNIQUE: Increased speeds to 65 mph sometimes, though usually 55. Drafting; EOC; DWL; neutral coasting. Ultra Gauge was reading 55.7mpg at fill-up, and since the power steering delete came along only after 120 miles, I think the next tank might be better than this one. Received Ultra Gauge March 30."
2011-04-16 356.5 6.749 $4.159 52.82 "Preparing for a WAI test. Slightly early fill for data to calibrate Ultra Gauge (which still was off and showed 55.6 mpg, 354 miles, and 6.34 gallons burned). Also calibrated car's odometer using google maps: odo showed 99.6% to 99.8% of google's stated route distance. NEW MODS: Improvements to WAI at 68 miles and 295 miles seemed to bring warmer air (abt 40-50 degrees above the weather). HYPERMILING TECHNIQUES: EOC; bump starts; neutral coasting; some drafting; speed varied up to 65mph. Tank miles 38.7%hwy (actual)."
2011-04-20 222.5 4.3 $4.159 51.74 "Calibrated Ultra Gauge fairly well, I think. Weather was colder. I redesigned the WAI repeatedly--in prep for an A-B-A test of it. Sealed most front-end panel gaps with black silicone caulk at 38 miles. Created prototype tire spats at 144 miles. Drove faster on the freeway at times to see how speed effects the gauge readings at 60, 65, and 70 mph. My prototype tire spats MIGHT be a benefit at higher speeds. 90/223 miles were freeway."
2011-04-27 518.5 9.695 $4.159 53.48 "Ultra Gauge, which I have MPG-calibrated, showed 9.41 gallons. Went to different station/pump than my usual beach#5. Redesigned and ABA tested the WAI at about 200 miles. Installed redesigned tire spats at 408 miles. 306 miles were on the freeway."
2011-05-07 565 9.582 $4.23 58.96 "I'm back at my beach#5 pump, but the results confuse. Ultra gauge said I used 9.98 gals., drove 559.5 miles, for 56.0 mpg. Last time ultra gauge offered better mpg than the pump. I need to further calibrate UG. For now, I stick with the pump as final authority. Starting using more P&G and route planning. I avoid freeways now, and get better mpg as a result."
2011-05-21 504.2 8.927 $4.099 56.48 "Fair amount of testing of two flat spoiler/wing designs and some colder than average mornings, with mist and rain. Also starter trouble. Not bad, considering."
2011-05-28 571.5 10.1 $3.999 56.58 "My Ultra Gauge again read too high: 58.6mpg. And it under-counted miles by 11 this time. I continue to rely of the Odo and pump as final word."
2011-06-08 532.5 9.318 $3.979 57.15 "Back at beach pump #5. Ultra Gauge seems to undercount miles by about 2%. This time it read 523.3 miles. Need to calibrate distance. UG read 9.09gals for 57.5mpg. Odo and pump are final authority."
2011-06-18 612.5 10.64 $3.939 57.57 "First 600+ mile tank. First few hundred miles were only at 48mpg average. I got to this number by improving DWL technique and adjusting ignition timing. I think I averaged mid 60s mpg for the later portions of the tank. Next tank should be a record FE level for me. I'd like to hit 700+ for the tank and 62 or more per gallon."
2011-06-29 621.5 10.27 $3.799 60.52 "3.89L/100km. Could not reach the 700+ tank, but did get my first 60+ MPG. Adjustment to ignition timing and improved ""driving with load"" technique probably account for the new high. But there were a few high temp days as well, and that must have contributed too.

As of this fill-up, I have driven about 8500 miles since beginning ecomodding this car (I started a while before staring this log)."
2011-07-18 638.5 10.36 $3.739 61.63 "3.82L/100km. Airdam and quarter-moon wheel skirts added midway. Readings, as always, are based on pump and stock odo. UG said 64.7 MPG. With the new aeromods and improved DWL techniques, I made the decision to drive a little faster and stay steady with traffic. So this tank includes more speedlimit driving than possibly any previous tank."
2011-07-30 611.6 10.38 $3.739 58.92 "3.99L/100km. What a heart breaker. I should have made about 60.7 mpg or higher. I had needed to recover from an 80 mile freeway trip that ended the tank and during which the airdam was partially separated without my knowing. I knew something was up, so drove more slowly and heavily hypermiled along secondary roads, limping to the gas station. I didn't guess I could have fixed the whole problem in 5 seconds at the side of the freeway. Ugh."
2011-08-10 617.3 10.02 $3.679 61.61 "3.82L/100km. Driving faster, driving about half miles on the freeways, loaded down once. I don't have drive under speedlimits often at all to get high FE results now. Car and technique improving. On average odo/pump calculated FE is 95.5% of UltraGauge reading."
2011-09-07 624.1 9.778 $4.079 63.83 "= 3.69L/100km. Used beach pump #5 to refuel, as always. Weather was sometimes hot during this tank (approx 100*), but generally just warm to very warm (approx 80s-90s). Changed oil to 0w30 at about 375 miles through tank. Fine tuning WAI. Fine tuning pulse/load techniques. Stayed off the freeways. UG had read 64.9mpg at fill up. Bought premium grade with this fillup, thus the much higher price."
2011-09-21 608 9.487 $3.939 64.09 "3.67L/100km. Beach pump #5, slowest flow rate, to first click. Has been colder and wetter here on coast and dawn is later. Lightweight deep cycle battery mod done at mile 250 seemed to hurt FE until alternator mod done at mile 450. Also ran 91 octane fuel, but not convinced it's worth it in my car. This new tank is 89 octane. My driving style is now mostly speed limit range when in flow with traffic, a little below limits when alone. Calibration of UG much better: UG claimed 608.3 miles, 9.39 gals, 64.8 mpg."
2011-10-06 616.1 9.386 $3.759 65.64 "3.58L/100km. Beach pump #5, slowest fueling pace, stopped on first click... new high. Alt optional delete working out very nicely. I was still tweaking and adapting the install during this tank and only in the last 150 miles did I have it so I never needed the alternator. But then I encountered more cool days, two rainy days (one very rainy), and much more dark morning/night driving. Until these ""mishaps"" I was seeing 67/68 mpg in the last 150 miles. Still, overall, I should have seen a decline in FE this time of year, and the next tank may be still another new high. UG read 64.6 mpg, 9.47 gallons, 611.6 miles."
2011-10-26 526.7 8.019 $3.839 65.68 "3.58L/100km. Fueled at the usual ""beach pump #5,"" using the slowest fueling pace, and stopping at the first ""click."" I tanked-up early in order to get engine problems behind me. This tank average was as high as 67.4 before trouble with ignition system developed. UG calibration more accurately predicts the pump/ODO readings now: UG indicated 528.2 miles and 8.00 gallons."
2011-11-08 601.3 9.05 $3.819 66.44 "New plugs working better, but showing new fuel fouling after only 450 miles."
2011-11-30 663.1 10 $3.939 66.31 "Harbor Pump #3. 89 Octane. Driving less at night to avoid lower temps and higher electrical load. Driving a bit more slowly too."
2011-12-22 451.4 7.14 $3.759 63.22 "Harbor pump #3. Slowest fill setting. Stop on first click. 89 octane again. The colder morning weather and the running problems complicated this tank. Early tank average was 56mpg (test driving/running). But MPG numbers much better during later 350miles, after completing distributor overhaul (replaced ignition coil, ICM, Cap, Rotor, spark wires)."
2012-01-16 611.95 9.852 $3.879 62.11 "Harbor pump #3. 89 octane fuel. The new ignition system is really helping. Driving fewer early mornings and refined acceleration technique for slightly better results. Driving more on freeways is fun and faster now because my aeromods really help me keep closer to the P&G MPG averages available through surface street routes. But the days are colder and that is pulling down my overall average."
2012-01-30 600.4 9.378 $3.939 64.02 "Harbor pump #3, slowest rate, first click, 89 Octane. The new VX wheels, near-new Michelin Harmonys, which I think are lower rolling resistance than my old UltraGT tires, and bigger wheel skirts appear maybe to have helped. But 64.02 mpg surprised me because my UG claimed 61.4 on the tank. I had toyed with its fuel consumption calibration thinking I was making it more accurate. I guess I need to rethink that calibration. Wheel skirts off."
2012-02-13 603.55 9.629 $3.999 62.68 "Habor pump #3, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. 89 octane fuel. No wheel skirts these days, and I do less EOC in order to keep the CAT lit more of the time. Much more night driving than usual due to late days at work. The new alternator off/on switch has been great for the night driving, and for engine off and engine on DFCO battery charging."
2012-02-27 606.1 9.519 $4.479 63.67 "Habor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. UG said 60.0 mpg and 9.77 gallons. During engine-off DFCO, the UG loses miles relative to the ODO. UG said 586.9 miles. Plenty holding me back these days: battery seems weaker; plenty dark and chilly driving; no wheel skirts for the whole tank; and no airdam the last 100 miles. ""Mystery Oil"" mixed into the gas to clean fuel system. Staying off the freeways."
2012-03-14 614.1 9.749 $4.519 62.99 "Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. Changed tranny fluid to Royal Purple 5w30 on March 4. Staying off the freeways until airdam and wheel skirts reinstalled. Also, battery seems to be deteriorating quickly: twenty four miles engine-off DFCO for power generation just to make my 12 mile commute. I also have to keep the alternator on for at least half my miles, and the freeway is quickly becoming out of the question because I run engine-on when on the freeway. UG said I burned 10.0 gallons."
2012-04-03 629.5 9.876 $4.519 63.74 "Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. New Odyssey PC 1200 deep cycle battery installed at 200 miles, when tank average was 58mpg, due mostly to constantly running alternator trying to compensate for collapsing old battery. Last 100 miles was with airdam reinstalled. Only 7 miles DFCO (either engine on or off)."
2012-04-16 650.05 10.041 $4.399 64.74 "Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. Experimented with 80-85% load pulses. Not sure it helped, but with new battery and reinstalled 3"" airdam I am able to drive at or near all posted speed limits (on average during P&G), including on the freeway. Several cold and rainy days in this tank. UG recorded 651.0 miles and 9.94 gallons for 65.5mpg. But the ODO/Pump calculation always has the last word."
2012-05-04 665.8 9.976 $4.319 66.74 "Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. Went back to 78% load target. First tank with new airdam on full time. ODO/UG and pump/UG calibration nearly perfect."
2012-05-15 702.3 10.5 $4.599 66.89 "Much time on the freeway this tank. Redesigned airdam and new side skirts are working nicely I think. I can drive 55-65 mph pulse and glide, averaging about 60mph with the engine on nearly all the time, and get 64/65mpg."
2012-06-02 659.8 9.929 $4.399 66.45 "Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. In the sweet spot: using freeways or streets as I please and averaging around the posted speed limits while pulling middle 60s MPG. Ultra Gauge reported 662.9 miles, 9.86 gallons, and 67.2 mpg. ODO/Pump calculation is the authority."
2012-07-04 634.1 9.843 $3.899 64.42 "Alternator always on through last several hundred miles.
Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-07-24 609.95 9.14 $3.999 66.73 "Alternator cut-off switch and charging issues resolved at 400 miles. Car running great again.
Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-08-25 734.75 10.711 $4.159 68.6 "I think this reading was a pumping error or miscalculation, and I'm stuck with it as my new high. Heavy hypermiling to compensate for smog test stationary engine revving. HOT weather! Got more use of alternator delete, but battery is still a problem, so I am getting a free warranty replacement. Primary O2 sensor failed in last 30 miles of tank. Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. EDIT: I changed the fuel usage number to a higher one from 10.407 to 10.711, reducing my mpg from 70+ to about 68.6 because I think I made a mistake in my first calculation somehow. This new number is arbitrary, meant to just barely put the mpg below the Oct 15, 2012 fill."
2012-09-06 516.1 8.44 $4.279 61.15 "Lowest tank since July 2011. I did mostly freeway driving this tank, so I knew it would be lower, because I seek an average of 60mph on the freeway. And I knew my UG was not calibrated correctly lately. But I didn't expect it to be this low, so I suspect pump error. Oh well. Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-09-28 624.1 9.618 $4.279 64.89 "First half of tank I did more freeway miles again, along the worst part of my commute, due to time. During latter half I stayed off freeway generally and the daily FE numbers were higher. I recently changed the O2 sensors too (had a CEL). And my ignition timing is back to stock. Last year advancing ignition timing 2 degrees was associated with a 3mpg gain (don't know if it was the cause). I'm wondering about advancing again.Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-10-15 666.25 9.711 $4.839 68.61 "Much cooler temps and more predawn driving in the dark, which usually means running the alternator. I compensated with very aggressive hypermiling and I stayed off the freeways almost entirely. I won't keep that up. This tank I wanted to see what I could get. Also used a couple oz MMO. Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-11-02 634.8 9.5 $4.439 66.82 "More intense hypermiling than is my preference and goal. Numbers will go down from here: it's cooler, I'm going to drive fast, and I'm developing starter issues that I can't resolve right away, so there will be more idling. Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-11-29 628.6 10.112 $3.879 62.16 "Colder. Running alternator for night driving more. New front brake pads. Replaced drive axles. Put 14"" wheels back onto front because of immanent tire failure on one of the 13"" wheels. Starter solenoid issues vanished, for now. Mystery bearing noise narrowed-down to either hub bearing units on front or transfer bearing for drive axles in the transmission. Been planning a transmission swap for better gearing. This may finally be the time. Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2012-12-19 563.65 9.113 $3.599 61.85 "41 degrees at dawn this morning when my commute began. To keep over 60mpg average, I have had to slow down and am off the goal of averaging speed limits. Still need to find source of bearing noise (probably hub) but can't take daily driver off the road right now. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-01-17 616.5 9.628 $3.779 64.03 "Driving much slower to compensate for cold. Though the UG said I used 10.1 gallons for about 60 or 61 mpg, the pump rules. So though I think this fuel log entry is slightly high, I'll post it. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-02-08 565.3 9.681 $4.199 58.39 "Transmission still needs replacing. Starter motor solenoid acting up after 200K miles, so I have to keep it running more often at long lights and use freeways more. Tires are probably lower pressure than usual. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-03-03 601.05 9.805 $4.359 61.3 "Fewer starter solenoid fails. Still running the original DX transmission with the bearing noise (and I'm sure increased friction losses). Tires were down to about 55psi (60 is my normal). Serious hypermiling to make up for problems and cold, though some days are warm like Spring now. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-04-03 620 9.7 $4.159 63.92 "1993 CX transmission installed at 410 miles. Throw-out bearing noise and ISB noise gone. But the loudest bearing noise I had turns out to be the hub bearing unit on front driver side. Also, I calibrated the actual odometer reading at fill-up (reading was 609.5). The purpose is to compensate for my larger than 1993 stock wheels/tires. I settled on a multiplier of 1.055 by comparing odo to a set route using ridewithgps.com. 410 miles + (199.5 miles * 1.055) = 620 miles. So I see improved FE over recent fills, but I am not sure the trans is the difference since I am still learning how to hypermile it. And the weather has been warmer. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click, but then went to a second click. Pump had read about 9.5 gallons but I didn't believe the number."
2013-04-22 637.91 9.578 $3.999 66.6 "First full tank with taller CX transmission. Weather is warmer, but I am driving a bit faster. More often on the freeway at 60+ mph to test and enjoy the taller gearing. My previous log entry probably an under-states FE because I went to a second click of the pump, refusing to believe the ~9.5 gallon reading on the pump since my UG said about 10.0 gallons. This time the UG reading was 10.078 gallons, so I calibrated the UG fuel measurement to match the pump. I also calibrated my distance reading. The stock ODO read 604.65 miles but using gps I have a multiplier of 1.055, which yields about 637.91. If at some point this calibration is proved incorrect, I'll change these entries. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-05-11 632.1 9.572 $4.119 66.04 "The '93 CX transmission is working out well, though I still have to reinstall the splash guard, which I think will bring my IAT up to the levels I would have expected. I get to stay over 60mpg while driving much more on the freeway and more often at the speedlimits on the surface roads. But the weather is much warmer, and these are calibrated readings. OEM odometer's actual reading was 599.15 (multiplied by 1.055 to compensate for wheels/tires). Without calibration the FE would be 62.594 mpg. In reality my last log entries with the DX tranny should be calibrated too, since the VSS, speedo gears, and wheel/tires are the same. Turns out, my odo has been under counting distance for years.
Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-05-24 603.9 8.964 $4.099 67.37 "The OEM odometer read 572.45, so the distance entered is after calibration with 1.055 calibration multiplier. I tested the calibration across 144 miles today using ridewithgps.com and got about a 5.5% undercount on the stock odometer again. I'm going to consider my calibration reliable now. See OEM odometer readings calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-06-08 657.05 9.845 $4.059 66.74 "Weather is warmer, I am driving faster and more on the freeway than before the tranny swap a few tanks ago. I have discovered that I can sometimes cruise at 55 mph getting anywhere from 58-74 mpg, depending on conditions. Stock odometer said 622.8 that multiplied by 1.055 equals the entered distance. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-07-05 637.01 9.86 $4.139 64.61 "Used 8.02kwh on charger, for $1.12

Replaced hub bear unit during last 30 miles of the tank (coasts much better now). Replaced two ball joints, re-seated trans oil seal. Also rode bicycle for 63 miles I would normally have driven. At fill-up, the stock odometer indicated 603.8 miles, which equals the entered distance when calibrated at 1.055. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-07-20 630.26 9.647 $4.199 65.33 "First full tank with hub bearing unit repaired. Lots of testing in this tank on freeways, without EOC. Installed brake drag reduction clips last 97 miles and averaged 67+ mpg in last hundred miles.

Also used 3.81kwh in charger, totaling $0.53 for the tank.

Rode bicycle 11 miles I normally drive. At fill-up, the stock odometer indicated 597.4 miles, which equals the entered distance when calibrated at 1.055. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-08-28 691.98 10.155 $3.899 68.14 "Enjoying driving the car at more normal speeds, and more often on the freeway. The gearing is great since the transmission swap.

10.05kwh x 0.14 = $1.41

At fill-up, the stock odometer indicated 655.9 miles, which equals the entered distance when calibrated at 1.055. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2013-09-18 664.23 9.944 $4.119 66.8 "Lots of early morning freeway commuting and school drop-off waiting. Last half of tank was with the new wheel skirts on.

3.61 kwh on charger. (3.61 x 0.14 = $0.51)

2013-10-08 634.8 9.916 $3.759 64.02 "I changed filling stations, seeking the cheapest price rather than pump predictability. My UG, which is well calibrated for my usual pump, said I used only 9.54 gallons, but the Costco pump said 9.916, so that is what I enter. And it is E10 gasoline (yuck) so I don't know if I'll go back, just because the price is $0.04 less than some of the other stations around.

Lots of early morning freeway commuting and school drop-off.

I messed up the kwh reading on the charger because I ran my chainsaw and my table saw on that extension cord.

Tire pressure dlown as low as 51psi on the cold mornings. More low-rpm 35mph cruising for warm-up or power generation. More freeway for school drop-off ontime arrivals... and there you go! Lower than usual. On the plus side, a couple days ago I got a free of charge spot to plug-in at work. And so I moved my kill-a-watt in the car now, and the power I get at work is tracked as well as what I get at home, even though I don't actually pay for some of the power. knock on wood ...

2014-03-30 626.76 10.021 $3.929 62.54 "Late in this tank, I started using higher shift points, as high as 2700 in second, 2500 in third, and 2400 in 4th. I also extensively used DFCO throughout instead of engine off coasting and braking. DFCO was for engine cooling and power generation. I turned the alternator on only during DFCO. The result is the lowest reading on the charger I have ever had for a tank, and FE about the same or slightly lower over the last several tanks. The higher shift points might have been the reason for the FE drop, or not. Can't tell.

2014-05-28 656.71 10.436 $3.979 62.93 "Either DFCO does not work on the DX Civic, or the shift points I have been experimenting with are counter productive. Ever since using DFCO extensively a few tanks ago my UG fuel use calibration has been off significantly. Even though I am using the same pump as before DFCO, the pump always shows more fuel used than the UG shows. Something is not right. At this time of year normally my FE is climbing.

ELECTRIC USE: 4.03kwh on the charger. 162.96 miles per kwh. This low kwh/mile number might reflect that I charged at work just before filling the tank. Normally I charge at home, which means I get gas, record the data, and then charge.

FILL-UP DETAILS: At fill-up, the stock odometer indicated 638.2 miles, which equals the entered distance when calibrated at 1.029. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. 2014-06-19 708.724 10.633 $3.959 66.65 "First 700+ mile tank ever. Used very little DFCO this time, and got better FE. I am not clear on why that is.

ELECTRIC USE: 5.0kwh on the charger. 141.745 miles per kwh. I think my heavy use of electric cooling in this heat is the culprit behind the greatly decreased kwh/mile economy.

FILL-UP DETAILS: At fill-up, the stock odometer indicated 688.75 miles, which equals the entered distance when calibrated at 1.029. See OEM odometer calibration thread here. Fuel pumping details: Costco pump 5, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click."
2014-07-12 725.342 10.578 $3.899 68.57 "Again used very little DFCO and got better FE. Instead if i needed to generate power in deceleration scenarios, I cut the injectors and kept them off while the car coasted in gear, alternator on, and throttle wide open if i was looking for better speed or engine cooling.

ELECTRIC USE: 4.96kwh on the charger. 146.238 miles/kwh. Frequent cycles of the electric radiator fan in this heat are decreasing the miles/kwh.

2014-09-03 678.57 10.294 $3.639 65.92 "The smog test was done on this tank, and a lot of charging time, since it sat off the road for 10 or 12 days. And I could not get my usual pump, so I cannot be sure there isn't significant pumping variation.

ELECTRIC USE: 4.30 kwh on the charger = 157.808 miles/kwh.

2014-09-27 658.817 10.683 $3.559 61.67 "Lower average is the result of losing my wheel skirts, airdam, and injector kill switch repairs/failures in the last 300 or more miles of the tank. I was over 67mpg until this started happening.

5.31kwh on the killawatt. 124 miles per kwh
640.25 on the stock odometer before calibration multiplier.
Got to use my usual pump, but that means the pump was different again since i had to use a different one last time too. Ultraguge recorded 10.594 gallons used and the pump read 10.683 for a 0.089 variation, which is great, because it suggests that using the O2 sensor reading to know when I am in DFCO, instead of the instant FE reading, might be more precise. I'll need more data, using the same pump a few times in a row."
2014-10-19 675.64 10.767 $3.399 62.75 "Most of the tank without wheel skirts, but at least the airdam is back and so is the injector kill switch. No time to finish new wheel skirts. Undertray still incomplete. Less EOC, because I'm kinda tired of it and instead have begun super-low rpm cruising more.

656.6 on stock Odo before calibration multiplier.
5.98 kwh on the kill-a-watt (112.98 mi per kwh)
Usual costco #5 pump."
2014-11-02 605.875 9.401 $3.179 64.45 "No wheel skirts, undertray still incomplete. Colder mornings.

Used Costco pump 7, not my usual pump. So I think this number was exaggerated by pump variation. It was more like 61.5mpg I think.

Raw odometer reading before calibration was 588.8
4.50 kwh on the kill-a-watt (134.64 mi per kwh)"
2014-11-23 651.099 10.488 $2.959 62.08 "Losing interest in some of the more radical hypermiling techniques. Feeling stuck in regards to car projects. Too much other work. But pleased the car is running well and grateful is does so well on gas!

Costco pump #7

5.37 kwh on the meter = 121.247 miles/kwh

632.75 miles on the stock odometer. Times 1.029 calibration multiplier yields the above distance driven."
2014-12-13 614.416 10.128 $2.559 60.67 "Stepped back from the most radical hypermile techniques. Relinquishing the goal of 60+ mpg all the time. I'll take what I can get. This tank featured the carboard template wheel shirts attached, but there were three days of rain during which the skirts were off, of course (being cardboard).

The displayed miles are the odo reading (597.1) times 1.029 calibration multiplier.
5.13 kwh on the kill-a-watt (I now keep an iPod and a cell phone permanently charging in the car, for convenience)."
2015-01-13 595.277 10.171 $2.339 58.53 "Modified my fuel economy goal downward to 55mpg from 60 back in December. I abandoned a couple hypermile techniques. This might be the first tank to show the effect. Car performs well. I'm changing some attitudes about hypermiling. Also have a backlog of incomplete task and mods for the car. Dash OEM odo reading was 578.5 miles. Lost my kill-a-watt data. But electrical use must be higher since I keep a phone plugged-in all the time, as well as an iPod touch (""stereo unit"") and occasionally my tablet."
2015-02-01 624.139 10.464 $2.339 59.65 "Reduced hypermiling effort. More ""nomral"" driving, though ""normal"" people would still regard me as odd and slow! Haha!

Wheel-well skirts are starting to look pretty good.

New WAI design is giving me lean AFRs and high IATs.

On the OEM odometer: 606.55 x 1.029 = 624.139
Have not been recording kwh lately. Feeling lazy about it."
2015-02-24 627.536 10.425 $2.979 60.2 "Bad fuel pressure regulator was dumping unmetered fuel intothe cylinders via the intake manifold for the whole tank, really badly at the end. Fixed it. And I actuallu think the fuel use was higher. The Ultra Gauge said 10.899 gallons. I did not fuel at my usual station. The number shown in miles is 609.85 on thw stock odo multiplied by 1.029."
2015-03-16 641.324 10.67 $3.269 60.11 "Second new fuel pressure regulator seems to work fine. Lost a lot of mpg running the engine for fuel pressure test, also lost fuel out of the tester. Hypermiled the lat 85 miles HARD, stretching the tank as far as possible, and pulled 71.2 mpg on those last miles, saving the average. Why not? Fuel pressure normal. Compression test good. Have more maintaining to do (oil pan gasket replacement). Can never get time for mods! Shown miles is the calibrated OEM number. OEM odo showed 623.25 miles."
2015-04-21 626.7 10.102 $3.039 62.04 "New fuel pressure regulator seemed to slightly improve power in low rpms. Warmer weather. WAI causing no troubles."
2015-05-09 650.26 10.834 $3.659 60.02 "After most of the tank suffering crazy sensor data and resulting low MPG, a cleaning of the grounding wires fixed the problem. And the *slight* power improvement noted in my last fuel log entry came back, after the electrical issues took it away."
2015-05-23 659.3 10.525 $3.699 62.64 "Fueling problems returned and reduced FE dramatically. Fixed it again in last 75 miles. MAP sensor connection issue is what it was this time. I hope that's the end. When it's running right, it is running the cleanest and best it has in years."
2015-06-06 686.446 10.651 $3.499 64.45 "Distance is calibrated using my 1.029 multiplier. Car running great in great weather."

2015-08-13 662.68 10.579 $3.539 62.64 "Instead of 2 or 3 weeks between tanks, i am getting 5 weeks between tanks since starting with the ebike."
2015-09-03 651.254 10.986 $2.999 59.28 "Calibrated distance at 1.029... different pump than have ever used before... ultragauge said 10.455 used and it is usually accurate... but the pump rules! So 10.986it is! fuel is cheaper again! Hurray!"
2015-09-29 663.14 10.439 $2.799 63.53 "Riding electric bike a lot, but also driving more miles around the region for work. Stock odometer read 644.45 and is calibrated, like I awats do, using a 1.029 multiplier based on multiple map and GPS comparisons to my odo with these wheels/tires on."
2015-10-16 652.128 10.707 $2.759 60.91 "Miles multiplied by 1.029 for odo calibration. Grill block has been missing for months. I think this number is optimistic... used a different pump. Ultragauge said 11.125 gallkns used."
2015-11-04 639.112 10.614 $2.799 60.21 "All is well. I am not as rigorous with hypermiling as I used to be."

2015-12-04 647.45 10.893 $2.659 59.44 "Experimenting with grill blocks. When I installed the new block with duct tape, mpg climbed into mid 60s for a few hundred miles. When i took it off during the last 200 miles as I contemplated how to mount it permanently, mpg dropped to just under 60. Also, injector kill switch busted for a while. Hypermile with less devotion."
2016-01-04 678.111 10.448 $2.979 64.9 "different pump than usual, diff station too. real fuel use was closer to 11 gallons, I think. lots of good hypermile miles too. grill block off."
2016-01-29 598.775 10.85 $2.799 55.19 "I lost some tank data. The miles are accurate because I photographed the odometer, but I lost the receipt. Nevertheless, I remember being surprised that I had barely more than a gallon left, and so 10.85 seems about right on my 11.9 gallon tank. And the price is about right for this station these days. Close estimate."

2016-03-12 625.426 10.925 $2.499 57.25 "Took upper grill block off for rebuild. Rotated tires. Distance multiplied by 1.029 for odo calibration."
2016-03-29 651.3 10.7 $2.679 60.87 "Lost part of my fueling data again, so the fuel usage is what I noticed my UltraGauge said when I pulled into the station. The price per gallon is what I remember from a glance at the pump. Only the miles are as recorded by my odometer, calibrated using my usual odometer calibration multiplier. I never go to the same pump twice anymore, so pump error could be playing here too."
2016-04-19 606.184 10.043 $2.699 60.36 "I no longer hypermile with the same dedication as I once had. And my basic tank average goal is just 55mpg, not 60+ anymore."

On a side mote, if I add the 2.11 kwh & 46 miles I did on my e-bike instead of driving and recalculate FE the ""hybrid"" in just under 66.7 MPGe."

Combining my car and my eBike (the miles that specifically replaced driving): if I add the 3.42 kwh used & the 86 miles biked and then recalculate FE, my ""hybrid"" got just under 74.833 MPGe.
---------
3.42kwh ÷ 32.78 kwh/gallon E10 gas = 0.104 gas equivalent gallons

647.961 miles car + 86 miles biked instead of car = 733.961

And I have been doing a longer downhill engine-on, neutral glide right at the start of my trips in my neighborhood. I used to do mostly engine off, with about 40 seconds engine on coasting to light the CAT, but I think that is not enough. I run it a minute and a half now, including some stand still idle, in order to light the CAT and get the downstream O2 sensor reading before I start typical hypermiling. Every trip starts this way now. My FE will suffer slightly, but the car will burn cleaner."

I have been work-focused and lazy about the car after all the repairs early in tue Spring/Summer. She running greatly, near 261,000 miles today. Original un-rebuilt engine, original clutch, flywheel, starter, alternator, catalytic converter... just quite solid. Honda builds the most durable engines."

2019-01-07 583.423 10.333 $3.059 56.46 "We had some of the coldest days I expect to see here in this Southern California semi-arid beach Zone. There was frost on the ground a few mornings at dawn. Halfway through this tank I reinstalled the warm air intake the brake assist vacuum canister expander and the ducting for my grill block opening into my cooling radiator. I have no idea if those mods contributed to this surprisingly low FE. But for a short while I had difficulty with the VSS signal. The speedometer wasn't working intermittently and so maybe that also affected the odometers calculation of distance."

2019-02-11 636.669 10.406 $3.459 61.18 "Still have not finished the wheel well skirt rebuild. It's also been very cold here, for California, and much more rain lately. Starter motor repair occurred late in the tank, and since the repair I haven't been turning the car off at any time during my commute unless I can bump start it. It runs great. The starter motor works great even though it only has the one full Bolt to hold it in. But I don't want to stress the mounting, so I let the car idle at stop lights and in traffic unless I have an opportunity to bump start."
2019-02-27 504.125 9.744 $3.199 51.74 "This is the lowest number I've had in possibly 7 years. I wasn't hypermiling very much, most importantly because I had to jury-rig a mount for the starter motor I replaced, I have kept the car idling at all stop lights and in traffic so as not to use the starter motor hardly at all if possible. But this number was so bad it reminded me that I have periodically lost the speedometer and odometer signals in recent months as if maybe the original gauge cluster is going out or the maybe there's an intermittent open in a wire somewhere. Even my ultragauge was wildly off this time. I was expecting 57 or 58 miles per gallon on the tank."

I started more ambitiously hypermiling in the last 200 miles and scored about 72 miles per gallon, according to the ultragauge, in those last couple hundred miles. This next tank is intended to be a 70 MPG plus tank. With the return of the wheel well covers, I anticipate entering the 70 MPG Club without the need for quite as much hypermiling."

Odyssey battery failing early. Using my new calibration multiplier of 1.076 instead of 1.09. I rotated tires and Google Maps and my GPS app both show a 7.6% undercount right with the tires currently on the front (different brand than those now on the back). These tires are not LRR either. They came with the rims and are in good shape so I have been running them."
