2009-11-17 418.2 mi. 10.86 US gal $3.039 38.51 US Slow drive back from Ferndale. P & G in town trying to maximize economy. Seems to have helped. Lots of rain and cool temperatures. Shell gas again.
2009-11-12 235.2 mi. 6.013 US gal $3.159 39.12 US Fill-up in Mt. Vernon on the way to Ferndale to see my best man from the wedding. Cool, rainy and windy weather, but slow speeds on the freeway. Shell gas.
2009-11-10 365.8 mi. 10.17 US gal $2.999 35.97 US Cold startup temperatures and rainy weather (A/C for defogging) took their toll even with medium speeds on the freeway. Not sure how to keep averages over 37 mpg when it keeps getting colder. Shell gas this time.
2009-11-05 412.1 mi. 10.81 US gal $2.959 38.12 US Commuting with some P&G attempts on longer sections. Heavy rain in the last 50 miles or so. Wind may have been a factor too. Chevron gas.
2009-10-30 379.2 mi. 10.24 US gal $2.979 37.03 US Commuting with a little leisurely Sunday driving. Cooler weather now (40 to mid-50s). Shell gas.
2009-10-24 377.4 mi. 10 US gal $2.899 37.74 US City commuting with a local Sunday back roads drive. Mileage is dropping - cooler mornings and days. Grille block definitely helping. Chevron gas.

2009-10-10 468 mi. 10.64 US gal $2.959 43.98 US Long single day excursion to Leavenworth, Ellensburg and Yakima. Then return via Hwy 410 around Mt. Rainier. Slow speeds because of traffic (Octoberfest in Leavenworth) and some city driving. Highway speeds kept usually below 65, mostly in the 50s. Just gentle driving, no super-efficient techniques. A long downhill coast in gear when cresting Chinook Pass - 5-10 miles maybe? Engine cooled off noticably. Temperatures in the 40s to 50s, low 30s on the passes. Sunny and relatively calm. Chevron gas.
2009-10-03 200.2 mi. 5.169 US gal $2.999 38.73 US City driving. Grille block installed. Temps in the high 50s. Some rain and defogger use. Chevron gas.
2009-09-28 377.1 mi. 10.34 US gal $2.999 36.47 US City driving mostly. Some heavier traffic because of school traffic and congestion. Cooler mornings but still 60s-low 70s during the day. Temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s predicted. Shell gas. Time for the grille block.
2009-09-20 440.2 mi. 11.05 US gal $3.259 39.84 US City driving and some freeway trips to IKEA. Temps falling a little - some cold mornings. Upper 60s daytime. Time for grilleblock again? Shell gas.

2009-08-30 432 mi. 10.97 US gal $3.099 39.38 US Mostly city commuting with some freeway driving towards the end. Oil change and transmission fluid change (58,000 miles) prior to our road trip. (Brakes at 60% front, 65% rear. Tires at 7/32nds all around) Chevron gas.
2009-08-24 409.8 mi. 10.55 US gal $3.129 38.84 US City driving mostly. Shell gas.
2009-08-15 441.6 mi. 10.79 US gal $3.059 40.93 US City driving with a trip north of Seattle (work - some congestion). Texaco gas this time.
2009-08-09 254.8 mi. 6.778 US gal $3.099 37.59 US In town driving. Temperatures cooled off - 70s. Thinking of using the grille block again... Chevron gas.
2009-08-03 380.2 mi. 9.67 US gal $2.999 39.32 US Spirited driving in Oregon and around Mt. St. Helens. Speed limit driving on freeway. A/C on for most of the time. Chevron gas.
2009-08-02 256 mi. 6.084 US gal $2.959 42.08 US City driving and a trip to Lake Cushman. A/C for large portions. (Chevron gas)
2009-07-29 409.7 mi. 11 US gal $2.999 37.25 US HOT weather - upper 90s at times. A/C a must. Drove out to coast (medium highway speeds) but encountered traffic jam when there... City driving for the rest of the tank. Shell gas.

2009-07-21 406.5 mi. 11 US gal $2.999 36.95 US Hot weather with a trip north (so A/C used). Oil change needed. Haven't checked tire pressure for a while. Otherwise mostly city driving. Shell gas this time.
2009-07-12 383.7 mi. 9.312 US gal $2.899 41.2 US Wedding anniversary trip to Oregon coast. Some windy highways with passing, but mostly clear driving. Rainy/drizzly with temperatures in the low 60s. Chevron gas.
2009-07-12 382.6 mi. 9.312 US gal $2.899 41.09 US Commuting with minimal A/C. Chevron gas.
2009-07-06 373.8 mi. 9.7 US gal $2.939 38.54 US City driving mostly with some A/C use. Temps in the 80s w/ high humidity. Shell gas.
2009-06-28 650.7 mi. 15.86 US gal $3.059 41.03 US Combined fill-up - partial fill in Mt. Rainier NP. Therefore the extended range. Not particular hypermiling when driving normally, but some P&G stretches occasionally. Hardly any A/C use. Some city, some freeway (60 mph) and lots of highway driving in the NP and out to Yakima (passes). Chevron gas.
2009-06-23 390.3 mi. 10.16 US gal $3.099 38.42 US Some commuting. Some freeway driving. A short jaunt to Oregon with some spirited driving. Chevron again.
2009-06-20 304.8 mi. 8.066 US gal $3.099 37.79 US Commuting. This time filled up with Chevron.
2009-06-13 412.4 mi. 10.86 US gal $3.039 37.97 US City commuting, rarely A/C use. Shell gas.
2009-06-02 429.2 mi. 10.7 US gal $2.899 40.11 US Spirited driving on a road trip - strong wind. Tried to avoid A/C use. Some commuting too. Filled up with Shell.
2009-05-28 402.4 mi. 10.57 US gal $2.839 38.07 US Mostly spirited city driving. Temperatures in the 60s and 70s - no A/C though. Filled up with Shell.
2009-05-18 436.5 mi. 11.08 US gal $2.799 39.4 US Mostly freeway driving at or with flow of traffic with extra passenger (Roxy). Some city driving and hauling pots and soil, but not much. Temperatures required A/C for 80% of driving. Filled up with Shell again. (Removed grille block because temperatures are getting warmer again.)
2009-05-16 322.6 mi. 9.036 US gal $2.689 35.7 US Commuting with some freeway and a 30 mile traffic jam at the end. Temperatures in the 50s with mid 60s in the end. Shell gas this time again.
2009-05-09 357.4 mi. 8.335 US gal $2.699 42.88 US Road trip to Silverton, OR. Driving at speed limit most of the time. Traffic was dense. Temperatures in the 60s to lower 70s. No A/C use, but some windows down driving.
2009-05-09 278.8 mi. 7.97 US gal $2.699 34.98 US City driving with some p&g. Warmer temperatures helping too. Filled up now with Chevron.
2009-05-02 91 mi. 1.711 US gal $2.559 53.19 US MPG Rally 2009 in Lacey, WA! Rainy weather as last year, but lots of pulse and gliding whenever practical. Had to abort that technique halfway through to keep average speed up. Very draining experience, but I'll take it!
2009-05-02 21.4 mi. 0.423 US gal $2.559 50.59 US Topping off to first "click" before the MPG Rally. Semi aggressive to warm up the engine and fluids well. Shell gas. High mileage due to topping off a little more on the last fill.
2009-05-02 411.7 mi. 10.28 US gal $2.529 40.05 US Mostly city commuting with some pulse and glide practicing. Freeway driving at moderate speeds. Filled up at Shell. Some rainy weather, but temperatures in the 50-60s during the day.
2009-04-26 417.7 mi. 10.61 US gal $2.499 39.37 US Nothing special. Warmer weather, oil change at end of tank. Filled up with shell gas.
2009-04-16 412.3 mi. 11.24 US gal $2.579 36.68 US Fill-up w/ shell gas. Topped off a little more, so probably closer to 39 mpg in reality. Back to summer blends?
2009-04-11 156.3 mi. 3.937 US gal $2.539 39.7 US Top-off north of Vancouver WA. Very slow and steady driving on back-roads only to Portland. Was hoping for more, but some city driving and traffic may have hindered optimal results. Grille block may be more effective at higher speeds. Also wondering if last fill-up with Shell gas was partially the reason why FE was up. This is Chevron gas again. Will try to experiment with different gas to check effects.
2009-04-11 434.9 mi. 11 US gal $2.499 39.54 US New grille block. Styrofoam cutouts wrapped in duct tape. No effect on temperatures as far as I can tell. Car could be sounding quieter, but that may just be me. No special driving scenarios, medium fast freeway and medium-slow city driving.
2009-04-03 342.2 mi. 10.66 US gal $2.439 32.1 US The pendulum swings the other way - sporty driving, mostly city, some traffic jams. Weather was drying up a little, and temperatures into the mid 50s sometimes. I suppose I'm checking if my vital signs are still there.
2009-03-26 412.8 mi. 10.64 US gal $2.539 38.8 US Very cautious driving - never revving to above about 2200 rpm. Lots of city driving, some slow highway driving. A few engine-off-coasts on long grades where permissible. Worth it? Maybe. Have to try sub 45-50 mph driving on long road trip - but wife may protest. Want to FE get into high 40s, but road conditions won't let that happen. Also fairer waether would help rolling resistance... At least it's getting brighter every day, so we can leave and return later every day with less risk of deer.
2009-03-20 289.3 mi. 7.209 US gal $2.359 40.13 US Some commuting and a trip to Portland. Much slow, some fast.
2009-03-18 359.2 mi. 10.69 US gal $2.339 33.6 US City driving - no regard toward FE. Always seemed to be in a hurry. Hoping the warmer weather now will help up the average again. Sure doesn't help having more city driving. (Also filled at a Shell this time, not Chevron.)
2009-03-13 373.8 mi. 10.6 US gal $2.359 35.26 US Commuting with some freeway. (Changed air filter @ about 45,500 miles).
2009-03-06 376 mi. 10.66 US gal $2.439 35.27 US Commuting and drive to Vancouver to see Watchmen.
2009-02-28 321.7 mi. 8.901 US gal $2.359 36.14 US Commuting and some city freeways.
2009-02-24 376 mi. 10.44 US gal $2.299 36.02 US Commuting and some freeway.
2009-02-15 205.4 mi. 5.747 US gal $2.439 35.74 US Tillamook back to Olympia.
2009-02-14 432.9 mi. 11.88 US gal $2.399 36.44 US Road trip to Eugene, Florence Tillamook, OR.
2009-02-13 361.1 mi. 10.45 US gal $2.439 34.56 US Regular commuting.
2009-02-07 127.9 mi. 3.181 US gal $2.359 40.21 US A little bit of back road driving at 45 mph and some freeway driving at 55 mph. Slow and steady.
2009-02-07 187 mi. 5.214 US gal $2.339 35.86 US Normal driving - topping off before little FE driving.
2009-02-02 342.2 mi. 9.726 US gal $2.159 35.18 US Nothing special. Temperatures pretty low at night (20s-30s). I'm thinking that the gas may not be atomizing as well as in the summer. Feels sluggish low in the revs.
2009-01-28 360.3 mi. 10.72 US gal $2.239 33.61 US
2009-01-17 308.6 mi. 7.817 US gal $2.239 39.48 US Road trip to Oregon coast. Last thrird of trip slow driving - otherwise not too careful. (Need an oil change now...)
2009-01-17 175.6 mi. 5.805 US gal $2.239 30.25 US City driving (by wife mostly). Oil change coming up...
2009-01-12 308.1 mi. 9.265 US gal $2.159 33.25 US City driving, rainy/snowy weather. Lots of stop and go.
2008-12-29 386.2 mi. 11.12 US gal $1.979 34.73 US
2008-12-10 395.5 mi. 10.76 US gal $1.859 36.76 US Commuting and trip north to Lynnwood at low freeway speeds.
2008-12-05 355 mi. 9.53 US gal $2.099 37.25 US Commuting, moderately cold weather (for Olympia). Nothing too special.
2008-11-30 314.7 mi. 8.741 US gal $2.059 36 US Pit stop in Sunnyside, WA. (12:39) (Arrived in Olympia @ 16:15. Total trip time = 14.5 hrs. WY to WA = ~1000 miles.) Oregon speed limits (65 mph) forced revs to stay under 3500 most of the time. 3500 = 80 mph.
2008-11-30 267.5 mi. 8.915 US gal $2.019 30.01 US Pit stop in Meridian, ID. (8:54) Cruise control at 83-84 for 3.25 hours. Revs always at 3650-3700 - just over max. "economy" range. Strong head and side winds.
2008-11-30 207.3 mi. 6.6 US gal $1.969 31.41 US Pit stop in Tremonton, UT. (5:30) High speed (76-82 mph) with winding parts of I-84. Strong head winds.
2008-11-30 359.8 mi. 10.41 US gal $2.199 34.56 US Fill up in Rock Springs before heading back to WA. (2:43)
2008-11-26 330.5 mi. 9.02 US gal $2.279 36.64 US Fill up in Twin Falls, ID.
2008-11-26 317.8 mi. 9.877 US gal $2.279 32.18 US Drive to Pendleton. On way to Wyoming.
2008-11-25 370.6 mi. 9.728 US gal $2.159 38.1 US Weekend drive to Seattle, commuting and more moderate freeway driving.
2008-11-22 368.1 mi. 10 US gal $2.199 36.81 US Wife commuting & a trip on the freeway. Colder weather (40-50).
2008-11-14 407.1 mi. 10.96 US gal $2.419 37.14 US Over half the tank was freeway driving - fairly consistent and moderate speed. Also wife drove a few days to work while I used the bus. Not sure what she would have gotten. Not that much worse I think.
2008-11-07 353 mi. 10.81 US gal $2.499 32.65 US New "era". I'm riding the bus to work (most of the days) and my wife will be doing most of the commuting miles. Let's see what she can do... She is receptive to hypermiling and is figuring out the car's "shift points". - Bad mileage = maybe winter gas by now? Worst last year was ~29 mpg.
2008-11-01 336 mi. 10.19 US gal $2.649 32.97 US Moving and commuting in city. Heavy car and multiple trips in city driving.
2008-10-25 142.5 mi. 3.103 US gal $2.899 45.92 US Trying to keep speed constant at 45 mph in zones of 55 mph. Lots of angry - and surprised - looks of people passing. Always catching people in the windy bits though. Fall color amazing, and temps. in the 50s.
2008-10-25 149 mi. 4.483 US gal $2.899 33.24 US Commuting - weather OK. Not too much rain. Some A/C. Topping off before going on weekend road trip.
2008-10-21 399.5 mi. 11.49 US gal $2.959 34.77 US Regular commuting. A little rain, a little defogging. Topped off with 0.5 gallons - gas is cheap again.
2008-10-15 381.7 mi. 10.59 US gal $3.399 36.04 US Freeway and city driving. Nothing special. A/C for defogging. Getting cold now - low 30s in the morning sometimes.
2008-10-08 410 mi. 11.32 US gal $3.709 36.22 US Road trip to Oregon last weekend, then just commuting.
2008-10-03 371.1 mi. 10.3 US gal $3.739 36.03 US Drive to Seattle last weekend - some A/C, moderate traffic. Rest just commuting within Olympia. No special measures taken.
2008-09-27 294.7 mi. 8.423 US gal $3.859 34.99 US City commuting. Minimal A/C - except to defog windows. Maybe P&G has some merit... 2 MPG - but is it worth the hassle, extra wear and tear, not to mention the safety issues?
2008-09-19 419.1 mi. 10.77 US gal $3.899 38.91 US Commuting for 1/2 tank, then jaunt to Oregon. 5-10 mph over the limit down there, 10 mph under coming back.
2008-09-15 404.8 mi. 10.79 US gal $3.939 37.52 US Serious attempts at P&G in town. 1/3 of tank on freeway with some A/C usage.
2008-09-06 370.5 mi. 9.6 US gal $3.959 38.59 US High speed driving to Oregon. Average speed of 68.8 mph on the way down. Then cruising along the coast back home. No special efforts made for better FE.
2008-09-06 410.1 mi. 10.86 US gal $3.959 37.76 US City commuting. Some A/C. Some P&G attempts - but not easy. Working on Smooth restarts. Higher tire pressure suspected for unusually good FE.
2008-08-31 245.9 mi. 5.37 US gal $3.959 45.79 US Drafting, 45-65 mph, with some Portland city driving. Tire pressure up to 43 psi.
2008-08-31 102.6 mi. 3.022 US gal $3.959 33.95 US Top off before heading south to Portland. Just commuting in town. Replaced K&N air filter with Fram paper air filter (~33,000 miles).
2008-08-28 380.7 mi. 11 US gal $3.99 34.61 US That's what driving in Seattle does to you FE... It was hot too, so lots of A/C use. (However, I topped it off with an extra gallon because it was so cheap.)
2008-08-22 381.6 mi. 10.75 US gal $3.99 35.5 US Commuting with hot humid days - A/C on most of the time.
2008-08-16 407.2 mi. 10.87 US gal $4.139 37.46 US Oregon Backroads Daytrip. HOT and windy roads. A/C on for a good portion.

2008-08-07 369 mi. 9.844 US gal $4.319 37.48 US First fill-up after returning from Canada. Tried hard to up the mpgs, and for a while it seemed as if 40 may be possible in plain city driving. But alas, no... Only about 2-4 mpg change between regular driving and FE driving? Only city driving though.
2008-07-27 673.8 mi. 16.86 US gal $4.408 39.96 US Combined entry here: Partial fill up in BC with 94 octane, then again in Olympia, WA with 91. BC gas is pricey, but made the engine feel much more powerful down low in the rev-band.
2008-07-27 379.2 mi. 9.13 US gal 41.53 US Pit stop in Hinton, AB.
2008-07-21 120.3 mi. 3.483 US gal 34.54 US Top off in Revelstoke, BC. Heading into Banff and Jasper NP.
2008-07-20 376.7 mi. 10.05 US gal 37.48 US Fill up in Kelowna, BC. 94 octane

2008-07-16 402.2 mi. 10.97 US gal $4.649 36.66 US Commuting with lots of A/C and rush hour traffic. Weekend trip to state park, i.e. more medium speed highway (40-55).
2008-07-11 420.2 mi. 11.3 US gal $4.509 37.19 US
2008-07-05 356.4 mi. 9.03 US gal 39.47 US
2008-07-03 389.6 mi. 11.05 US gal 35.26 US "Enjoying" the car again after trying hard for FE last time. Weather was hot and needed the A/C on most of the time. Kind or surprised at this FE.
2008-06-28 407.5 mi. 10.75 US gal 37.91 US Slow acceleration and lots of engine braking, but city driving and getting stuck in a 40 mile traffic jam and hot humid days with occasional A/C use didn't help. Tried to reach 38 this tank...
2008-06-22 414.7 mi. 11.47 US gal 36.16 US
2008-06-16 353.3 mi. 9.5 US gal 37.19 US

2008-06-11 521.7 mi. 12.66 US gal 41.21 US Fill up un Boise, ID. Speed limit driving, with drafting whenever possible/practical. 20 mph rear winds. Filled up to brim to have greatest accuracy possible. (Two "dots" on fuel gauge still remaining.) Oh, and heavily loaded car. Trunk was full (wedding gifts). At least another 200 lbs.
2008-06-11 400 mi. 11.7 US gal 34.19 US City driving (commuting) - moderate economy.
2008-06-02 365 mi. 10.9 US gal 33.49 US Probably the most spirited driving I've done to date. These Michelin tires are just scrubbing where the OEM tires were completely out of traction - very good tires! Makes me wish that they'd offer a LSD for the regular Civics.

This was mostly city driving, just the last 40 miles I tried to draft semis from a safe distance on the freeway to save fuel. I think I could have done the 60 mile round-trip to Tacoma, but I didn't want to get stuck on the freeway - so better safe than sorry.
2008-05-25 358 mi. 8.36 US gal 42.82 US Road Trip! Drive to Yakima, then north to Ellensburg, then across Snoqualmie Pass and back home. P&G used on long downhills whenever traffic conditions allowed. (Maybe 10 miles total.) Driving at speed limit for about 85% of the time with slow acceleration. Main difference: Drafting at speed limit whenver possible and practical. (New tires feel better now, first they seemed "squishy".)
2008-05-24 345 mi. 9.67 US gal 35.68 US Commuting (city) with a ~200 mile round-trip to Portland. Lots of A/C use. (20-30% oil life remaining) Not too careful about economy. First attempts at Pulse & Glide.
2008-05-21 363 mi. 10.79 US gal 33.64 US Used the MPG Rally gas card (bought me about 2 gallons of 89 grade). Also, hottest two days of the year so far, so lots of heavy A/C use. Just a 50 mile trip into the hills for fun, otherwise just city driving. - First official tank on new Michelin MXV4 tires. (Recommended pressure.) (~50% 89 octane, and ~50% 92 octane)
2008-05-11 414 mi. 10.83 US gal 38.23 US Commuting to work, and weekend trip to Seattle via I-5.
2008-05-07 445 mi. 11.7 US gal 38.03 US Normal commuting. City and highway. Mostly low to medium speed.
2008-05-03 91 mi. 2.019 US gal 45.07 US Lacey MPG Rally 2008!
0000-00-00 394.5 mi. 10.35 US gal $2.899 38.12 US Commuting with much rainy and coolder weather. Trip to Seattle probably nudged mileage over 37. Grille block definitely helps warm up the car on cold startup. Chevron gas.
