By the looks of the numbers, this will be bad. And it is a mystery. I drove with my usual attention to maximize economy. Upon refueling, I did not utilize the 'automatic click-off' at the pump, but rather held the dispensing lever manually until it clicked off while at a very low fueling rate. Could it be that manual dispensing allows for significantly more fuel to be added than does automatic fueling with the dispensing mechanism set on low flow? If so, the truth will come in time as these variations come to average. At any rate, in my driving technique, I maximized my time at 27 or so MPH after the gear change and then at 45MPH. Additionally, I am trying to achieve gear increase at the lowest possible RPM prior to increasing throttle pressure to the next gear change. Time will tell if my strategy is well-headed.

While I drove reasonably well, I would credit the high mileage of this tank to the unusually early 'click-off' from the automatic fill at the pump. As usual for recent fills, I went to the second auto-fill click off. Still--it happened early, this time. Included in these miles were one city-errand trip that was driven reasonably intelligently and a commute detour that involved some stop-and-go and hills. As well, I caught myself 5 to 8 above the 40 MPH speed limit on my commute highway SEVERAL times! Aiyyyy! It is what it is.

Drove well. Changed my fueling procedure from topping off completely to topping off after the 3rd automatic click-off from the low flow setting on the dispenser. Consequently, the mileage is inaccurately high for this fill-up. I changed to commuting via the state highway--with a lower speed limit--instead of the interstate. I also made this fueling 1 week after my last fueling as I'm trying to maintain 3/4 of a tank or more at all times . . . because earthquakes! This tank included 2 daytime commutes (nightmare!) and 5 off-hour commutes. UGH! Disappointment in the mileage. I was sure, on this fill-up, to fill as full as possible . . . so that may be a small factor. Damn. Here's to next week.

I did better this time. I'm going to limit my highway speed to 60 for this present tank and see how it goes.

Compared to my personal best of 40.2 MPG, this was a sad result. Two circumstances figured prominently: 1. to get that 40 MPG record, I had used EOC. Thanks to members of this site, I learned that practice could damage my transmission (automatic, not approved for dinghy towing). So, without EOC, the mileage took a hit, for sure. Additionally, it is the start of winter conditions, and I have used the defrost fan--on occasion even idling at start (I so hate that) with the defroster on high to clear windows. Bummer.
