2017 Chevy fullsize van 2.8... Hit 33.3 mpg highway

Finally had some longer highway drive time and found out just what it could do. Full size Express Cargo 2500 running about 7500lbs GVW with 2.8 diesel, humid 90 F Outdoor, AC running. Was running behind a semi much of the time, but not too close, so that definitely helped. Hit as high as 35 for shorter stretches but at about 65mph over about 60 miles averaged out to about 33.3 mpg on the dash readout. This was running on fairly flat land (northern Il just west of Chicago). Came out to about 32.3MPG once I exited the highway in Chicago and hit local streets.

Not mods yet. Hope to get better shocks, some front end aero (grill air flow improvements, short belly pan) and get the tranny reprogrammed to stay in high gear below 65.

Holy crap! That’s some damn good mileage out of a full size! Looking forward to seeing more!

My first hint was....

when I recieved the vehicle new after a 90 + mile drive down from the dealer and the fuel gage still read full. HMMM?

I wonder how well it would do running without an extra ton of cargo?

Do a 200-mile out & back loop on cruise control with same van weight from the same fuel pump (fill, and then refill; both times to first auto shutoff). and then report back.

I can see 30+ from my 9,000-lb CTD one ton pickup for extended stretches at the usual 58-mph & 1,725-rpm, but a trip has also a beginning and an end. Not just a middle. 25-27 is the likely number I’ll see by trip end given “nice conditions”.

HP Demand, is what to look upon.

Steady-state is lowest, all other conditions exert a penalty.

It’s the stop-n-go in town that separates men & boys. My pickup or with a 68,000-lb tractor trailer it’s about being smooth. Never stopping, only gliding.

I took the challenge about ten years ago from our world champion Cummins engineer Diesel Dave that only stop/go separates highway from city. MPG. Difference is too broad.

Agreed. So took my 18-mpg around town to 22. Every trip planned (after all combined); no left turns, etc. Plenty of discipline to pull it off.

In turn that made my combined average (all miles) 24-mpg (26 highway and 22 city).

Otherwise it’s 19. 21 if I work at it.

The savings with modern emissions diesels doesn’t start until nearly 200k miles. Not with family use. A gasser is easier to live with.

PLANNED USE is the FE key, then. (No one stop trips).

Very impressive. Please start a fuel log so we can see how this thing does over time!

It's fabulous! I'll sleep better knowing things like that are available to the mortal man.
Appreciate the numbers.

If you can continue to duplicate that that would be amazing. GM was saying something of a 25% increase in MPG with this engine as I recall.
