I can address some of this, having a 2014 Odyssey in my garage right now. Last week we took a road trip 550 miles each way. That's an all day drive, with kids in the back, so I wasn't creeping along. Simply using cruise control at the 65/70 limit except for hills where I took manual control to avoid downshifting.

3 tanks, all 30+ mpg
(at the pump as well as on the gauge).

Around town, low 20's. It's a big machine.

Ya got us beat. But then again, of course you do 65-70 is a high 20s affair in the Chrysler, I think. I honestly haven't driven it THAT much.

Well Like I said, we did do a similar 29.5 MPG 500 mile trip in our 2011 Chrysler like you described except no cruse and slightly lower speeds but also western Montana 2 lane hills and valleys. We didn't have 3 fill ups as it was all done on a single tank. The more recent 500 mile round trip was down to 27 MPG but that was cruise 70-85 over 3 mountain passes. A normal tank gets us 21mpg with 80% city and 20% highway. The worst I have ever seen is 18 mpg in the dead of winter, warm ups and idling, and aggressive studded snow tires all around town. I'm sure the most recent version of any of the minivans would do a little better but at what cost up front? Our van has 75K on it and has never needed a single repair, just 1 set of brakes and tires, oil changes, wiper blades, an air filter, that's it. The gas cap light came on twice because the cap was loose. On top of that it was about $10k less than anything we could have bought with the same age and mileage from Honda or Toyota, because we shopped them all. We bought it 2 years old with 25K on it for $15k and it's a mid level Touring model. In a few years if the Pacifica Hybrid turns out to be reliable we will buy a 2 year old one. Now that is a big jump in economy as we would probably only have to put gas in it a few times a year and our electricity is pretty reasonable. I even have 240 in our garage already so we could use a faster charger.

18?! How does my wife register 14.xx for an average?! Well I guess her schoolyear routine does involve school dropoffs, that's most of her trips. School is close and I get around 18-22 in an unpolished routine for that when I'm home. 4800lbs is 4800lbs, and I barely drive it.

Civic is worth about 38 doing school routine, and by the math with my current 45.5mpg avg:

(45.5/38)x20 = ~24mpg. So I'm not that far off after
accounting for power steering, which I lack, and manual vs. automatic.

Yeah, that's my wife driving, I'm sure she has a bunch of wasted idle time. Whenever I drive it I often reset the dash readout and i have no problem getting over 20 even just around town. On the 8 mile more highway run to my daughter's house I routinely keep it over 30 on the gauge. The numbers I posted are not those short runs but whole tank hand calculated numbers. Our van also has that "eco" button which I leave on all the time. I really think that makes a big difference and that mode is not allowed to be used in the EPA testing cycle. It really keeps the RPM down on an otherwise almost 300 horsepower engine. It shifts much earlier. One time I pulled out on the highway tires squealing and I thought, what the heck? Then I noticed that eco mode button had gotten turned back off. It is night and day on power so must be helping with mpg as well.

Man, 37 is impressive from such a big vehicle.

I remember struggling to get 26-29 MPG US in my brother's old '98 Dodge Caravan driving on an exceedingly MPG-friendly route with a posted limit of just 80 km/h (50 mph)!

26 mpg (US) on the trip there pulling a small (450 lb) boat trailer. Little wind. This was almost exclusively driving with load, no cruise.

29 mpg on the return trip without the trailer. Drove slightly faster, same techniques. 15 mph crosswind from about 8 o'clock position.

Pulled 27.9 mpg over 55 miles through steep mountain passes averaging 25-40 mph yesterday in my family's minivan. Lower gears uphill but neutral and DFCO downhill. Ridiculously steep Virginian mountain passes though.

Teaching my mom to eco-drive the rest of the way home. Over halfway there and todayshe's been averaging 28.4 through the mountains.

2006 Odyssey

My wife drives a 2006 Odyssey EX (no cylinder deactivation).
it has 140,000 miles and new PCV and EGR.
she gets 20 around town and we get 26 on the highway with cruise set at 72. I haven't seen a real mpg advantage to driving 55 or 60-the van seems to be geared for 65-70. (conclusion based on the 240 mile highway roundtrip we do constantly)
I use Dash Command app for long trips and I did notice the mileage go down as the temperature climbed into the mid 90's.
In the winter she preheats the car and it idles a lot so she gets about 16-18.

very reliable- our first honda I agree they are a great brand.

Puddlejumper: I tested speed vs. MPG in my brother's 2007 Ridgeline -- same drivetrain as your Odyssey.

As you can see, its best fuel economy is definitely at a lower cruising speed than 65-70.

It's not just honda and toyota that can get good mileage, I can do pretty well in my Pacifica too. Lifetime is 28mpg but sometimes I can do better than 35.
