Have you mooched a ride in another 1951 Mercury? Maybe they all do that.

Maybe the true esoteric purpose of those dual dummy Appleton spotlights was as vortex generators.

There are a lot of ways to approach the problem ,But I think some of you are missing out on One of his stipulations .It needs to be removable I'm assuming he doesn't want to have to repaint the entire car just to shave some drip rails .

The cardboard and tape approach to find the problem might not be a bad idea .

The wind noise of the b pillar might be solved by putting a bevel of some sort in front of the B pillar against the glass.

Maybe made out of fiberglass? Have it lip into the window track top and bottom?

That was my suggestion in Permalink#15, but in reference to the A-pillar.

I've transitioned from a Superbeetle to a VW Dasher. The external rain gutter on the Superbeetle is very similar to the Mercury. The Dasher has very much less wind noise with the driver window down, but I attribute it to the flush glass.

I think the rounded leading edge of the B-pillar causes buffeting.

Half the point of air conditioning, seemingly, was to roll the windows closed, the wind wings, and the floor vents.

Better control of temps (especially humidity & dust) and THEN the quiet.

Let's not forget other traffic. That is disturbing.

Franks comments about headphones correct. Not legal, as one is closing off an important sensory input.

The SAAB wing is "good". JC Whitney and others (1960s) used to sell a small chrome wing to go at the A-pillar post base to act as a buffer to wind hitting ones face with the window open. As with other period pieces, they may still be out there.

65-mph or slower is the easiest cure we used to use. If one studies "average mph" the advantages become clear.

Merc trivia

A 1955 Mercury V8 competed in the '55 Mobilgas Economy Run and returned 21.6-mpg.
