Article: "2015 Subaru BRZ offers huge surprise in mpg marathon"

If you drive a sporty car at moderate speeds at low RPM in top gear you can get decent fuel economy!

Who'd a thunk it?

(Or maybe they pulse & glided the **** out of it. Who knows?)

2015 Subaru BRZ offers huge surprise in mpg marathon - Torque News

Quote:
Now in its 14th year, MPG Marathon is a two day [330 mile / 531 km] event organized by Fleet World magazine in the UK, and is a live demonstration of how both car and driver can make a massive difference to fuel costs and emissions.
The BRZ is rated 36.2 mpg (Imperial) on the Euro cycle, which is 30 mpg US / 7.9 L/100 km.

The drivers squeezed out 55.42 mpg (Imp) = 46.1 mpg US = 5.1 L/100 km. Good enough for 2nd place overall in the "% over official rating" category:

Quote:
This surprised and impressed the judges at the UK event. The Ford Fiesta ST-3 1.6 EcoBoost SCTi came in first, the Ford Focus ST-3 2.0T finished in third place.
Of course, the top 3 MPG numbers were in cars we don't get on this side of the ditch:
  • Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 I"DTEC Man = 97.9 MPG (Imp)
  • Ford Fiesta 1.6TDCi Titanium Econetic = 97.1 MPG
  • Citroen C4 Cactus - Blue Hdi 100 Feel = 95 MPG
All subcompact diesels, of course!

Having his cake and eating it too!

I should enter my WRX STI in one of these things.

i'm already achieving 52.5% real-world improvement over EPA estimates.

Cruising at Moderate speed, top gear, low rpm in the STI...my scangauge II shows ~40-45mpg which is 71% improvement over EPA

I can't get 45 mpg doing 40 mph in 6th with my 2.4L TSX. It just doesn't like to get great fuel economy.

I was only able to average 27 MPG in my Forester, although I once got that driving up hill to my parents' house, and then 40 MPG driving downhill over 165 miles. However, that project went the way of Zerohour's (http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...-5l-14034.html). He replaced it with a Mini Cooper and disappeared, but he had some very good skills.

45 mpg vs. 27 mpg average in the "real world" (842 owners)

Let's put this BRZ's 45 mpg US results in context:

- 437 FRS owners are averaging ~27 mpg US, says Fuelly.
- 405 BRZ owners are averaging about the same (slightly higher).

Crash and burn, another potential new car crossed off my list. In that case I just as well get an older Scion TC thats been boosted and riced out.

The BRZ was the car that crossed my mind when I was looking for a car, but as it's not sold here, I went for the new Fiesta ST.
