It was a bit of a joke. The purpose was to make sure the 12V battery is kept cool. Under normal use it is unlikely to vent gas, let alone acid vapour.
Yet if it does fail catastrophically I can imagine you'd rather not suck it into the air intake - though the air filter would most likely prevent any damage to the engine.

Took it out for a normal trip and difference is night and day. Niky and red devil you where on right track. Engine under tray was holding to much heat in engine bay. Now need to change airflow around engine and probably air intake. Engine temp guage was slightly lower power well up. Had to overtake a lorry and trailer kick down is very quick on part throttle and revs to 5500. That equates to 76mph in third. Mid range pulling power is improved. Now wondering if even longer intake will help bottom end on a very high geared petrol auto. Maybe be chasing the impossible have another 18" of air intake hose from another car I could add on.

Consider checking the O2 sensors too. A rich runningnvehicle that deposits heavy carbon on the tailpipe is also depositing extra crud on the O2 sensors and the ECU is using data from those sensors to set AFR (in part). Even though you have no CEL a suboptimal O2 could be contributing problems. There are ways to clean them, I am told. I bought new. The one that matter most is the upstream one.

Hi could be O2 sensor as it's 20 years old. Probably worth getting new one. Know they can be tested but cleaning them is not really recommended.

I would think this method so easy and cheap as to be worth a try at least:
