If you're happy with sub-20mpg then you can put just about anything in there. It's small and light enough for a 4 banger to move quite well. There was a guy on here that put a turbo 2.3 Ford in his Edsel.

I personally would stick with anything fuel injected for the daily drivability and the prupose of having the best of both worlds in economy and a little power when you wanna romp on it.. And I personally wouldn't be scared of anything V8.

Corvettes have been known to stay in the 26-30mpg hwy with a 6spd and LSx engine... I like where this is going alot and kudos for finding such a clean car!

Nothing wrong with keeping it all AMC and original. The T5 is the best card up your sleeve for FE, if you know what you are doing with the carb and distributor that car will get good MPG, those cars got good MPG back in the day afterall.

i might be putting the 5speed swap on the back burner for right now. i ran into a 1971 258 that will bolt into this car and allow me to use the factory trans/bellhousing so i might go that route. it still should get low 20s with that setup and if something goes boom boom in the transmission ill have the other setup ready to go. it will be an increase from the factory 199 to the 258 so the increase in power is also a plus

The first car I ever worked on was a 1969 Rambler Classic, 2 door, same blue, same seats. It was family transportation for us, my mom didn't have much money, so when the Rambler wasn't running, my brother and I would take turns riding out bikes to the store for groceries. With that motivation, at 14 years old, I figured out how to do simple things like replace the water pump, the starter motor, radiator hoses, with little else but some open end wrenches, dime store pliers, borrowed tools, and some automotive advise from neighbors (some good, some not-so-good).

Good luck with your project. I had trouble finding the right parts when mom's Rambler was only 8 years old. It seems AMC was at the end of the supply chain for assembly parts. They got the pick of whatever GM, Ford, then Chrysler didn't use. Midyear changes, several different part numbers to choose from, were all part of the process when working on AMC's.
