The Amazonas is fitted with a Volkswagen air-cooled engine and the 4-speed transmission, but its secondary drive was through a chain. IIRC it still had the differential assembly, but it was welded locked and had the ring mounted in the same side as in the earlier Kombi in order to reverse-rotate as it was now behind the engine.

Anyway, if I were going to build a motorcycle with a car engine, if I were going to use an inline-4 instead of a flat-4, I'd probably mount it transversely and attempt to get it shaft-driven instead of chain-driven.

Way too ambitious. You will never finish it. Too big and heavy to wheel out of the garage.

Might still be easier than a Boss Hoss. Anyway, if there is even a V12 motorcycle made around a Lincoln Zephyr engine, a Volkswagen-powered might not be any rocket-science. BTW a few years ago I saw some pictures of a Honda CBR 1100 repowered with a Volkswagen Diesel.

I would look for a 10 hp. V-twin industrial engine to ease the vibration issue. The tricky part may be finding the right transmission.

In a last-case scenario, I would eventually consider to just get a centrifugal clutch like the one used in the Mobylette, since it's alleged to work in a way rather similar to a CVT.
