So its an plug in e-assist with a big battery.
Which was the only way I thought the original e-assist would be able to give you an improvement.

Any word on cost? I wonder what mileage the car gets with just the LS swap and in the hybrid mode.

From the video it sounds like it would get up to 35mpg in fully charged hybrid mode, then wear the battery down and get an optimistic to +10%. Which is exactly what gm claims that the original e-assist gave, which translated to +0% in the real world.

vskid3 — I don't know the details, I just saw the video and put it up here to see what peep's comments would be. (Thanx oil pan 4)

They don't specify a fixed battery bank size, but the weight is IIRC [250?][450?]lb. Battery capacity will determine range, like any other serial hybrid.

What occurs to me is that a Gilmore belt at 1:1 ratio is an energy drain. It just shows they could not deal with relocating the radiator. With that they cold have fit the hood.

I think they said the pack in that rig was 11 or 12kwh of LiFePO4.
Each kwh of LiFePO4 weighs at least 11lb in raw cells.
The original GM e-assist that didnt work has less than 1kwh.

Seems just using the hybrid Tahoe transmission in a hot rod would be cooler. You get regenerative braking and the motor can be off and still deliver pure electric mode. I see them on Ebay used for just over $1000.

Hersbird — Thanks, that's an interesting part.

Quote:
The 2ML70 transmission is a four speed rear drive which can be configured in a two or four wheel drive application (Fig. 1).
I'm not seeing the four wheel drive part. But then I'd want a Rambler flathead six in a fad T.

I've been watching Youtube videos from Oztralia about rear-mounted turbos.* With the hybrid transmission under the floorboard and a turbo behind the rear axle it would be a clean package.

*(stock headers and engine compartment, and the air return pipe makes for an intercooler)

cost for that? Motor & controller, ~5k. Batteries, another $5k. Charger and incidentals, at least $1k more.

Weight: batteries, ~250lbs. Motor ~150lbs. Plus incidentals.

35 MPG out of that heavy beast is decent. But, as noted, it probably drops to 15 or so once the batteries are drained. Regen will be minimal, so don't count on it recharging your batteries as you go...though, if it can keep the engine in a better BSFC area, it might benefit you, the same way pulse and glide does.

BTW, the engine says Vortec on it. The main difference, afaik, between that and the LS is the Vortec is cast iron, and generally comes stock with less performance(hp). So, unless they bolted a vortec air cleaner on it, it's probably not a real LS.

Those numbers sound reasonable. At least what [some] market will bear for the product.

What I like about Hersbird's suggestion is that it follows the EVTV philosophy of repurposing OEM junkyard parts. Reverse engineering the CAN Bus control messages would be comparable to what they are doing with Tesla drivetrains; i. e. not trivial.

But a T-bucket [with maybe a GM v-6] could have a single header down one side of the body and the return air duct up the other. And a battery pack in an abbreviated pickup bed.
