Even with high miles (245k!) that would be tempting to look at.

The '04 Echo I scored last weekend was also a moving sale. Seller was motivated.

This first one, at $750 has the adventurous side of me intrigued.

2000 Red Chevy Metro

Quote:
I have a 2000 Red Chevy Metro...I have put a lot of work and money into the car. However, It's always one thing after another...so I have decided to sell it for Parts or to someone who can fix it themselves. I was told I have 1500.00 in parts...well that's all well and good but I refuse to sell it for that price. SO I am asking HALF for it..$750.00 or BEST OFFER....CASH ONLY and you MUST be LOCAL ( to avoid Scam Artists ) You will have to come and get it yourself. It starts, however it sputters and at this point it is undrivable so I wish NOT to put anymore into it. You will have to tow it yourself or pull it behind another car. But it is here and ready to be SOLD IMMEDIATELY!!! FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!!!

The second one, at $1000 isn't bad either.

How about a $300 Honda Insight?
2001 red manual $300 - Insight Central: Honda Insight Forum

Needs troubleshooting from a wrongly-wired replacement engine... but for $300 how can you miss?

Honda Insight in WV. Price is "a couple hundred bucks."

2000 Manual basket case red - Insight Central: Honda Insight Forum

Light front end damage, needs a transmission rebuild and the IMA battery disconnected to run as a gasser (or replaced).

I saw this one:

2000 Honda Civic Mechanic special

$1000 Honda Civic HX (2000 with 142k Miles)
Needs a new head gasket. If you can replace that then you're set.

I replaced the head gasket on my Forester and it should be far easier on the Civic. That car looks nicer than mine, except for the dent in the rear quarter panel.

Except the blue book value, at least in my area, is only $1,767--with a good head gasket, although I spent several hundred over for my HX, and received $500 over for my Forester.

However, if the engine overheated, there are a host of new problems, and I would not trust anyone selling a car to tell me everything about its condition.

I picked up an insight earlier this week with 150k miles.

1 Year old BB battery
Runs and drives great
Fairly clean interior.
2 brand new RE92's and 2 slightly used ones.

I paid 1600, I know it's 100$ over but considering I had to spend absolutely nothing on the car (the reg is even good until next year!) I figured it qualifies. Most people spend 1-300$ on some general maintenance (oil change, tires, trans, spark plugs, air filter, etc etc) but this car literally needed nothing. Even the EGR plate was clean!
