It's actually like an ecomodder member saying that there are other ways to extend your car's range than hacking in auxiliary fuel tanks. More efficient buildings is at least as much a part of the answer as wondering how many more nuke plants we need; the nut behind the wheel, as it were.

I think market forces are going to determine what gets solved first. But the utilities are going to screw with the market where they can.

Renewable energy is the fastest growing sector, by far. Even the conventional grid benefits from storage, and it goes way beyond home storage:

They are also making 100kWh Powerpack units, which are stackable.

AC electricity is easily transported but can NOT be "stored"

...but...

DC electricity is not so easily transported but CAN be "stored"...in batteries (ta,da!)

hvdc is here to stay.

"A high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system uses direct current for the bulk transmission of electrical power, in contrast with the more common alternating current (AC) systems.[1] For long-distance transmission, HVDC systems may be less expensive and suffer lower electrical losses. For underwater power cables, HVDC avoids the heavy currents required to charge and discharge the cable capacitance each cycle. For shorter distances, the higher cost of DC conversion equipment compared to an AC system may still be warranted, due to other benefits of direct current links."

i can only see this as being any way used/have money put into it, is if homes are close to work. i dont want to live within 10-20 miles of my work. my wife cant. suburbs, apartments, condos would all have difficulties, either distance or sq ft storage/restrictions. i have HOA restrictions myself. this, at societies present level, would serve no more than 10% of the people. a lot of money to move closer to services not including getting it all on line.
maybe im being closed minded but i cant see this as reality in my future.

A few states require accomodation for EVSE installation in condo's/apartments, though it is up to the requestor to sort out the details and costs (including billing) and get approvals. I don't know the specifics in texas.

It could be a "selling point" for the powers that be however, so always play that angle if you do have layers to sort out.

If you have your own garage then it should be easy peasy. A parking space would be more of a challenge.

And then there's street parking. Lots of this, maybe?

EVTV have been talking about what it takes for a fast-charging station; it's either a massive mains line or a local battery pack with a high-current line to the vehicle being charged. The house and the car have a similar power requirement. Doubling the size of the house battery would accommodate the house's use requirement plus be able to quick-charge one or more vehicles.

Bucky Fuller tried to give his Dymaxion house design to the banks and the American Institute of Architects and they turned up their noses at it. He envisioned housing as a service, like your telephone (was). The fact that society can't be veered from it's hellbent path (Bucky's tombstone says 'Just call me trimtab') is what has me self-identify as a social anarchist.

The way it will work is you'll pick up your smartphone and a fully charged autonomous vehicle will pull up out front.

But if it is ultimately deemed the default "safe" law abiding pilot, there is no more reason for "sports cars".
