The other side of the question (at least for some of us) is how many miles per gallon of petroleum we're getting.

I think the is pretty close to normal. I think there is a 3% energy content difference so it would be normal to expect that difference.
I think for E10, there is a 15% BTU hit for the ethanol, but at 10% of the total, it would be just a 1.5% BTU hit/gal. My estimate for my car would be not more than a .5 MPG loss. I could be wrong on my info though. Non Ethanol is readily available here without much of a price difference, so I prefer it.

With the Cobalt I had back to back tanks of 40.01 in July with E30, so 57 mpg petro. 37-38 mpg with E50, 74 mpg petro.

From the data I found in the past. E10 has 96.4% of E0's btu's . E30 89.3, E50 82.5 & E85 71.6. Assuming 45 mpg of E0 is still a good, E30 per energy calculates to 40.1 mpg, E50 37.1 mpg.

I think E0 will net slightly better MPG, about 2-3%, but here it cost almost 15% more. So in cost per mile it's not worth it.

I've been running E15 since it became available near by at 5% cheaper than E10, and getting about 2% loss in mpg vs E10. Maybe 5-7% mpg loss vs E0 but 20% cheaper.

But there has been a study that showed higher Ethanol content can get higher MPG than E0.
