Don't know what your obsession with car differentials is, but a car's starter motor driving a lawnmower tire, dropped down onto the rear wheel for reverse, with a slider switch, wouldn't be too hard to do.

I was thinking about something different, to provide electric power to the driveshaft instead. That would only require the transmission to be in neutral while reversing.

Don't know where you would attach it. The CB900C's driveshaft is enclosed in a tube.

Here's the best shift pattern with relative shift RPM from Redline to next gear. If you shift earlier (Say, at 9,000,) the RPM of the next gear will start lower.

Thinking about an auto starter motor dropped down on the rear wheel for reverse, flip it over from right to left (or left to right, depending on the spin) to add power for taking off from a start, saving the clutch in stop and go traffic. Probably need to have a car charging system and battery to store volts for the auto starter motor.

Dropping something directly on the rear wheel? I know it's a whole different idea, but reminded me of this:

I presume you plan to make a retractable mount for the starter motor in a similar arrangement to the one used in this device fitted to some Euro trucks...

I totally forgot this detail. It's been a while since I saw a CB900 for the last time...

I'v worked up ma chart showing the relative RPM of the engine in each of th 10 gears. The five main gears (1L, 2L, 3L, 4L, and 5L) are shown in Red numbers, and the ratios for each in High range (1H, 2H, 3H, 4H, and 5H) are shown in Blue numbers. I have boxed from 8,000 RPM (max torque,) to 9,000 (Max HP), as well as from there up to 9,500 (Redline) The two speed sub transmission reduces RPM by 17% when in High range, thus some ratios are very close, and others (5L and 4H) are virtually identical. The main advantage of using Low and High ranges are in the lower gears, to fill the gaps between 1L and 2L, and for that extra higher top gear (5H), but with the paddle shifters, all gears can be used with little lost time. (The chart is so long I couldn't get it on here in one piece, but it is there in the following post)

Here's the full chart. (Sorry about the quality, I had to video my monitor.)

I've been trying to re-invent the front end, but I think I should just use Dr, Porsche's little gem:
