I've been bitten by the bug since before I ever even joined - it was just joining that finally made me take a more systematic approach. And now that my eyes are open, there's no going back.

Thanks for ten - or nearly so in my case - and here's to however many more it takes.

elhigh: FYI, I get a kick of seeing your comments on Jalopnik. I read it almost daily and have noticed a few thoughtful posts by you. (At least I assume it's you.)

I should read Jalopnik. I've gotten the sense I have a Jalopnik sort of taste in cars.

Though I'm not really excited about EVs and the politics surrounding their growth, nowadays it wouldn't suprise me to see conventional automatic transmissions getting replaced by hybrid systems. Just look at what Toyota is doing in Europe, where in certain markets some of its models are offered with either a manual transmission or a hybrid powertrain. IIRC nowadays at least in Portugal the RAV4 is now only available as hybrid.

most notable efficiency-related changes in your automotive world in the last decade?

While fuel mileage has gone up to some degree it hasn't really been all that significant. Not when it is possible to get around 200 mpg. See Eagle-Research"s "Why 200 MPG is Possible".
We all know that gasoline is composed of multiple fuels from 1 hydrocarbon in the chain up to xxx hydrocarbons in the chain. The problem with truely vaporizing gas is vapor lock. Cracking gas to the 1 hydrocarbon gas give you a 10:1 exchange. But that fuel is inefficient in a low compression engine.

I did once get my old style Pontiac Bonneville up to 13 MGP using a fish tank bubbler in a jug of water/alcohol mix.

Kind of a threadjack, dude. And there are lots of great reasons why that "200 mpg kit" isn't already in every car.

Though many things have changed in the car market, reports of random "miraculous" makeshifts that could supposedly improve fuel-efficiency don't seem likely to fade away so soon...

I don't understand how that would eventually improve mileage.
