I recycle cause I'm cheap. I fill maybe one bag per month at ~$3 each....the rest gets hauled by myself to a recycling place when I go shopping for food, etc.

I use only one side of the toilet paper though...not THAT cheap.

Humans ARE essentially walking alimentary canals...in one end...then out the other. All else revolves around this basic function....people stop wars...sex...raising children to eat & drink don't they?

Exactly. And I throw away much less trash than the average person because I'm too cheap & lazy to work my butt off paying for a consumerist lifestyle, and all the extra packaging material that would go into the trash.

And because I've been cheap for a good few years now, I have sufficient investment income that I don't actually have to work to maintain my basic non-consumerist lifestyle. Which, I should point out, has not been without its luxuries, like a plane, a horse, and a large garden full of trees & flowers - even if it does lack a 60" TV in every room :-)

The article focused on sulfur, but according to Wikipeida, "Carbon dioxide emissions from shipping is estimated to be 4 to 5 percent of the global total." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environ...t_of_shipping]

According to the article, cargo ships use the cheapest and dirtiest fuel, so I imagine that they were forced to run cleaner, they would need better fuel, and not only would trade cost more, but the price of fuel would go up.

So, rely on domestic marketing, upgrade the rail system, use electric trains, and power them by burning hippies!

Misleading, at best. The "pollution" they talk about is mostly particulates &c, which is basically irrelevant to global warming. If they were magically converted to diesels meeting the highest pollution standards, they would still be emitting almost exactly the same amount of CO2.

How about this explanation: China's sulfur pollution deflected the sun's rays enough to keep the temperature constant until they began scrubbing the particulates. Or something.

It's been widely theorized that restrictions on sulfur emissions in the US accelerated global warming in the 80s.
