Its probably been said already but anyway... The Fiesta is a sub-compact car that gets almost as much MPGs as the Prius but the Prius is a Mid-size car. That is a full two classes BIGGER.

If you are just commuting solo get the sub-compact, the soccer-mom (running two plus kids all over town) who was thinking of an SUV is better off with the Prius.

I think the size difference is exaggerated some. What are we talking? An inch here or there? I wouldn't want to ride far in either back seat.

My Insight is slightly smaller than a Prius, yet much bigger than the new Fiesta at work that I regularly park next to.
The Focus Estate would be a better comparison sizewise.

Five inches of legroom and four inches of shoulder room in the back aren't insignificant. Cars.com wasn't even listing cargo space or rear headroom for the Fiesta. the Fiesta's tiny interior was enough to put me in a Fit.

FWIW, the rear-seat leg room space in our 2014 Prius is HUGE compared to what leg room there wasn't in our 2011 Cruze!

Addendum: I'm 6-foot tall and my head doesn't hit the roof, but taller people might have problems.

Me too. I spent a week driving from coast to coast in a Fiesta. It would work for me as a solo vehicle, but I use the back seat daily. I'm 6'2" and I had the seat so far back there was only a 3-finger gap between it and the rear seat cushion.

Another time I drove coast to coast in a Prius (gen 2). That would have been fine with a telescoping steering wheel, which the new one has.

The way I see it, Fiesta / Mazda2 / Prius c are all roughly comparable in size. And Fit / Mazda3 / Prius are the next size up.

I am also 6'2" and rode in the back of one woman's Prius because her shorter friend apparently thought that it was funny. She probably had her seat forward, but I had more legroom than I needed, while I am cramped in the back seat of Mom's 2,007 Camry. Her seat is all of the way back, but she is only 5'7". Dad's 2,012 Focus is far more comfortable to drive, but is similarly cramped in the back seat.

However, my head did not touch the rear window in the Camry or Focus, like it did in the Prius.

My experience echoes yours - Prius is fine for rear legroom but not headroom. I found the headroom to be roughly the same in the Fiesta and Prius.

"Sub compact vs mid size"...

Personally, I try to ignore the scope of "American Standards" and follow the "What does 50% of the world live off of?"

They live off of bicycles, motorcycles, and tiny cars for big families. I will be happy that my family will learn to be grateful with a sub compact for the rest of their lives. 5 seat belts? CHECK!

That is also why my house will never be more than 1000sq/ft.

Just sayin, since my life has been immensly better since adopting this way of thinking and I wish someone told me sooner (like before I was 18 and enslaved myself to a mortgage sized student loan?!) AND YOU CAN TOO!!!
