So this car might be for sale but I have no idea what the guy wants. I think too much but you never know. He got a project Javelin and mentioned he was going to put his Astra for sale. It has a VW drivetrain, a 2180 with dual weber 44's I think. I have never seen it running. This car barely comes up to my belt, probably a nightmare to get in and out of but I wonder how good of an ecomodder it might make. Electric conversion would be the obvious choice, I don't think I would want to spend more then 60-100 miles at a time in it LOL! How efficient can VW motors be? I know nothing about old VWs. What would the drivetrain be worth in this thing if it did still run good and be a supposed 135hp performance build? Here it is back in it's showcar glory days

I'd ask $5-8000 if it were me. Less than the two-toned Superbeetle convertible next to it.
VWs respond well to tuning, although it is usually done for (4x) power. Crank-fired (distributorless) computer ignition systems and fuel injection are on the shelf. Subaru swaps are popular. I haven't seen direct injection gas engines yet, but it won't surprise me.
EV conversion would be best, recouping the drivetrain price would depend on mileage, etc.
All it really is, is a shape and not a particularly good one. There are steel Beetle bodies with less frontal area.
You hit on the big problem—ingress/egress; or maybe it's just more important to me as the years go on. The Beetle body was optimized to accommodate the majority of humanity.

I do think the frontal area is smaller then you think, look at the picture, the whole car is lower then the base of the windshield on a normal bug. Width is similar. This guy really likes these quirky vw based kit cars so I doubt he actually sells it. He went cross country to buy this one.

Narrow wheels, wide tires and overhanging fender arches. It's anti-stanced.
I think it would look better with a Superbeetle windshield and more tumblehome.
I'll back up my statement you can get lower frontal area in steel:
Oh course, fenderless gains on frontal area and loses on Cd.

Well crap. I have pics you'd love to see but the files are too large.
Truckful of Tesla Model X's. Not a bad looking car. Really clean aero underneath. They all seemed to have kinda quirky body panel fit but I suppose I can give em a pass on that.
