I honestly think the 1.8L has a chance of matching the 1.4T, if they had the same final drive ratios. Cue conspiracy theories. Did GM increase the 1.8L drive ratio to bump down the mpg and sell more 1.4T's?
The stock difference is only 1mpg city, 2 highway.

The 1.8L has a much less available torque at lower RPMs... I would bet it had more to do with drivability than conspiracy to sell more 1.4T models. 
Don't take that to mean that I think the 1.8L car would be undrivable with the Eco manual trans

ME_Andy I have looked into this as I was very interested in getting the active air dam shutter system myself. I recently was at the dealer having my oil changed and I spoke with the technician responsible for their specialty work (turbo/EV) and he said as was stated above that each car is programmed to its specific components, and he also thought it was cool I was trying to frankenstein my cruze. So if you wanted the air dam shutter system you would have to install the eco ECM. On top of that if you were to install the eco ECM you would also need the transmission obviously because of its different gear ratios.
However the lowering springs, eco rims, lower air dam (non shutter system) are all direct swaps between the models. I'm not sure if the manual trans is compatible across to the 1.8L though.

I bet you could get the eco's grill block cheap. I haven't had one off, but if it's like a Malibu, it's a separate chunk of plastic clipped onto the back of the bumper cover.

I'm not really interested in the active shutters. A passive grill does fine by me.

would be tricky since the diesel is not sold with a manual, but add the long leged 6 speed to the diesel.
will take some digging just to find out if the bell housings are the same gas to diesel..

Actually I just looked up the stat and the diesel gearing is already a lot taller than the other models (3.2 final drive vs 3.94 for the 1.8L gas). Must be nice...
Haven't decided if I'll keep the Cruze yet b/c I have an Elio reservation. If I do keep it, the plan is:
1. 24W LED headlights ($80, save ~0.1hp)
2. get ECO wheels (~$1000, save 21#)
3. lithium ion battery (save ~30#, haven't figured out the details yet)
I do like this car alot and my fuel cost is only 7c/mile, but those steel wheels are driving me crazy.
