Comparison of the shift rod and components.


Closeup of the bolt that retains the shift rod in the correct orientation within the shifter housing. This difference between the Corolla (Left) and Scion necessitates the swapping of the shift rod components.



Picture of the tooth I removed on the Scion Shift Rod to allow me to install all the Corolla shift housing components.

Picture of Corolla Case / Scion Bell housing with the case drilled out for the three bolts. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but I did use a cordless drill and had a helper align the drill to make sure I drilled in straight.

Update:

I have logged 4800 miles on the Scion since the conversion (Mixed driving and one drive across country). It's very easy to get 40+mpg if I hold my freeway speed constant at 61mph. Averaging 70mph is about 37mpg. Mixed driving for me yields 42-43mpg. All of these are through my calibrated scanguage and a complete tank of gas.

My best two tanks are 47.8 and 46.5mpg so far. Speeds were kept under 55 on back roads around my home. I try to glide when I can, and kill the motor at long stop lights.

Still considering doing the taller 5th mod, but that will be later this summer.

All in all, I am very happy with the swap and haven't had any issues. I am not at the mpg level as many folks here, but with the great tips/tricks I have learned... my mpgs have only gotten better and better.

On a different note, the Scion pulls my small utility trailer great. No problems going up hills loaded with a riding mower and misc supplies from home depot.

Wow!
First search and I found exactly what I am looking for. This thread is only a couple of years old, but the photos are missing links. Does anyone still on here have any access to the fine details to this mod?

I'm in need of a new tranny for my XA, as my 4th gear has been non existent, and 3rd is quickly dying. I also have a blown oil seal in the pass. side input shaft.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

You may want to check out my thread here where I detail out the plans I have for my Tercel. The C15X and C5X transmissions will both bolt up to the bellhousing of your xA, so you have a lot of choices. My plan was to use a C52 from an old Corolla along with the automatic differential gearing from a Paseo or 4 speed auto Tercel. This would give quite tall gearing and give something like 1350 rpm at 45 mph.

Yes. I came across you thread late last light. I was up until 3am reading, cross referencing, following links.... This is great info. Thank you.

Now. On any of these threads, there is zero mention of drive shafts. The assumption is that once you swap bellhousings, everthing else falls into place. Is this true? So far I can't find anything to confirm this.

With the xA you might actually not even need to swap bellhousings since yours comes with a C5X transmission, right? If its a C15X then you'd need to swap them.

If you do need to swap the bellhousing, here is a procedure written up for Tercels: http://board.tercelonline.com/viewthread.php?tid=42739

You'll just reuse your stock drive shafts.
