For the computer it's just 3D objects recognized by edge detection algorithms.
Computers can't yet judge situations based on these ques, but they will soon.

Cameras will one day be able to handle a greater range of brightness than the human eye too, enabling great low light visibility as well as bright visibility.

Paul Akman created a system to read faces, emotions, spot lies...

The TV series Lie to Me was based in his studies. He found there was facial muscle reaction involved in feeling that was universal. This image mosaic of faces it's exaggereted, and there are many other few expressions that took just a fraction of secnd or that are a lot more discreet, but spots emotions of many kins.

I bet people in future will be charged by facial conducts.
Take the face expression computer recognized, smells sensors too, and sexual phenormonium reactions, made by computers put on glasses, connceted to web in real time. Jesus... Any male who teachs in a class with 17 year old girls would be finished, f... of.

Face expression recognition could help the self drive vehicle try to avoid criminals on street. But it's something still a bit far, maybe 15 years far.

It could also help spot bad drivers, angry drivers, too old senile drivers, and be used for create more security approachs, like keep a larger distance from the unsafer vehicles.

I don't trush in automatic pilot tests made on EUrope and USA. These countries have good roads and people not so crazy or angry.

Put Tesla self drive car in my country (Brazil) with our horrible streets, horrible roads and terrible people around, and I want to see it survive.

I think autonomous cars are a lot farther off in the future, than some people think. At best, I think fixed routes, with guidance markers, may be plausible in a few years. And then maybe on limited access highways, that have been pre-mapped into the computers, after that.

How it works in detail? A mix of image analyzy with some kind of radar ?

A 2D image can lead of error of interpretation for depth. A 3d system would avoid mistakes of object estimation, but would take more processing power to analyze data.
