Valet parking?

I agree. The hotel was a definite luxury for us (it was comped), and I didn't know about the valet parking until we got there. It kind of annoyed me, mostly because I didn't have the choice. So I am the only one at this $300/night hotel with a beaten down 15 year old poverty car, which was forced to make a grand entrance in front of every patron under the grand entrance portico. The thing is, even though I can't afford such extravagance on my own, I would pay for it if I could and I do feel very at home in such an environment. I prefer a bit more informal luxury, though, like an Aloft hotel compared to the very upright and traditional luxury afforded by the establishment we stayed at. And please, let me park the damn car by myself if I so choose LOL.

I often go shopping on my way to or from work.
Although my work uniform has my employer's name on the shirt, people often approach me with questions in shops, or even while simply walking through a mall, because they only see "a uniform", without looking further.

There's more than a little irony there for me. Even though these days I could easily afford to stay in such a place, for the first half of my working life, if I got into such a place at all, it would have been as staff. (And in fact I did pay for my 2nd year of college by working at a mid-scale resort.) I suppose that's privilege :-)

How could the president of the United States be mistaken for a valet? Was this recent? I'd probably act like an arse and say that if u saw him standing around...right before I was tackled by SS.

(I just can't believe the BEAST was valeted.)

I think he is saying that it happened before he became President, and that it is a common experience of black professional men - of course implying that it's racism in action. Which I think is a crock on two counts: 1) Lots of us professional white males get mistaken for menials of various sorts, too; and 2) I don't think most professionals, black or white, spend all that much time in places where there's valet parking, so Mr. Obama is thus mistaking his own membership in an elite for common experience.

As long as the car was half decent, I'd take the opportunity. I am probably a better driver than at least half of the sportscar drivers out there. Cautious but exploring is how I go about it.

But I literally don't know how enthusiasts go about it without a proper manual, which most makers eschew these days.
