Cummins tried coating. It ate through and around the coatings. They tried steel but that wore the cylinder bores out something like twice as fast and the increased reciprocating mass reduced efficiency and caused problems balancing the engine power assembles on some engines.
The best way to burn relatively untreated or lightly treated bio gas is in a gas turbine since they are made with high alloy steels that are very corrosion resistant or boilers, it also helps that boilers and gas turbines burn the gas as soon as it enters the engine.
I work with bio gas and I know people who work at the Cummins R&D plant here in clovis so I have a real good idea what it does.

It wouldn't be for direct propulsion engines but it would be nice to find a way to use manure and sewage for electricity instead of just letting it gas off into the atmosphere.

Home Page - Cool Planet : Cool Planet

One of the most important things for humankind is to sequester atmospheric carbon as massively as possible. Biochar is the most beneficial way to do that, and Cool Planet extracts high-octane gasoline from it's process.

In terms of volume, global biochar market stood at 100 kilo tons in 2014.

On the basis of application, the biochar market has been segmented into agriculture, water & waste water treatment and others. Agriculture was a major application segment of biochar market and accounted over 80% share of the global demand in 2014 and is expected to continue its dominance in global market over the forecast period. Water & waste water treatment is another major application segment and expected to exhibit significant growth on account of growing hygiene awareness and effective water infrastructure.

I also like this -> Oak Ridge National Laboratory: Nano-spike catalysts convert carbon dioxide directly into ethanol

Given the technique’s reliance on low-cost materials and an ability to operate at room temperature in water, the researchers believe the approach could be scaled up for industrially relevant applications. For instance, the process could be used to store excess electricity generated from variable power sources such as wind and solar.

I don't see that at all. You'd have to sell the fun aspects of small cars, kind of like the Subaru ads getting out to the ski area while all the SUVs are stuck in driveways.

I may have missed it, the link suggests that it uses hydrogen generated from biogas. At least the hydrogen production process won't suffer much from the impurities in biogas.
As many have stated before, the future is crap!

Making hydrogen from bio gas pretty much eliminates any possibility of it being a "affordable alternative". Better of just refining it to natural gas quality and using it like natural gas.

I suppose every bit of exposure helps. I wonder if Toyota had any luck selling the Rav4 hybrid as a result of all the adds they made for it. Mostly targeted banner adds.
