Yeah it’s used as a cooler to prevent coking not warm up the oil but I’m sure it does a little of both. It would be easy for you to add one all the ej Subaru blocks have the same external dimensions...

My Subaru Outback xt has one from factory it sits...

My Subaru Outback xt has one from factory it sits between the filter and block. Though that car is far from efficient being an awd wagon with a 2.5l turbo

I’m fairly new to hypermiling and ecomodding but I finally got my Subaru Outback over 30mpg with my best tank yet at 31.07mpg! It was done with about half rural/small town driving and half highway...
