If I take my car to go shopping I will typically get 8 l/100 km or about 30 mpg over the 2 km or so. Cold start, slow speed, parking crawl etc.

My commute sees 3 times that economy.

But torque does not offer a measure of engine load percentage, does it? You need that measure to fine tune your throttle technique. Most cars want between 75% and 80% load for best fuel...

Which car are you driving? The VW or the Toyota? Both are good candidates. Look at P&G (pulse & glide) and EOC (engine off coasting) on the lists of techniques. And look at DwL (driving with load).
