1.0 L Focus engine Top Gear review

I'm amazed. A website dedicated to performance gave the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine a great review. I really hope we get this engine in the states. Check out the link below.

Cool. Here is an article from the LA TImes this month, sugesting that more than just Ford will be bringing three-bangers to the USA in 2013. We'll see. Certainly is cool technology: http://www.latimes.com/business/auto...,4405998.story

EDIT: "Ford is shipping two of the three-cylinder Focus models to its Dearborn headquarters, where next month the North American marketing team will start to evaluate how U.S. drivers might view the car. Engineers will review technical aspects, looking to see what modifications might need to be made."

HydroJim -

It's like Ford built the car we always talk about building ourselves :

0-60 in 12 seconds is like the good ol' daze!

I want this engine in a CRX.

Not amazing, really. Top Gear is not Clarkson, Clarkson, Clarkson. There's James May, who is very mechanically inclined and fascinated by these new cars, and I recall Horrell being of the same bent from some of his older editorials.

Can't wait to try this car out myself... though it will probably be a long time before we get it here, given the quality of local gasoline.

I found this little bit of chicanery interesting:

Engine sound will be one of the things engineers will be sure to consider as
they ready the new three-cylinder engines for the U.S. market, said Sullivan of
AutoPacific. Small engines can sound tiny and cheap to some American
consumers. BMW and Ford's Lincoln division are both using the internal audio
systems of vehicles to enhance engine sound in larger vehicles.

"This could be used on a three-cylinder engine to make it sound like an inline
four-cylinder engine or a V-6 via the speakers in the car," Sullivan said. "If
you could offer a 175 HP inline three that sounds like a V-6, would you buy it?"

Automakers see three-cylinder engines as the next big thing - latimes.com

Added a YouTube video to post 1: technical presentation of the engine by Andrew Fraser (Chief Engineer, petrol engines). Barcelona. 8.02.12.

In North America, you can bet we won't see this engine in the Focus. Nearly 12 seconds to 100 km/h / 62 mph will be deemed "too slow". Maybe in the Fiesta though.

I wish they would have put this in my Fiesta. If they do it could be the next Metro in a few years.

With the stated over 12 sec 0-60 time in a Focus, it's a good bet they will put it in the Fiesta for the US, since we couldn't stand anything that slow to 60 MPH.

In a Fiesta it should be close to 45-50 MPG combined with good gearing, much more if driven properly.

What would really be nice would be a 2 door Fiesta without all of the junk added, but then that will never happen. Either transmission would be fine as long as they got the final drive ratio low enough for 2100 at 70 MPH. Add a couple of feet to the rear to get the aero drag even lower than maybe .24.

Bring that engine and the focus wagon here. I would run to my dealership to get one!
