150,000 tire pressure gauges being given away to promote efficiency

A group based in Ontario called "One Change" is going to give out 150,000 free tire pressure gauges to help educate the general public about the importance of tire pressure on vehicle fuel consumption.

The education campaign comes from the same group who also started the "Project Porchlight" program, which gave one compact fluorescent lightbulb to homes in a door-to-door effort to get people thinking about simple changes that affect energy conservation.

Apparently you don't just get the gauge and walk away - there's a short clinic first, so the education bit isn't missed.

MetroMPG -

Pretty neat. Is that *the* gauge? I like gauges that have the air-deflation button.

Don't think that's THE gauge... I just grabbed a random one to illustrate the story

Despite the tempting lure of "FREE!", I already have a couple of gauges - so I wouldn't bother going for another one.

But I have to think the marketing is smart: I bet the type of person who would agree to attend a let's say 5 minute seminar just to get a FREE! tire gauge will also be the type of person to actually put the knowledge gained (not to mention the FREE! gauge) to use and save some fuel.

I'm guessing they will be those stick gauges that you put on the valve, watch the graduated inside part fly out, read a number that has no meaning whatsoever, then throw away. Why they exist I have no idea.

Hmm, I would use one of those to test a tire at a known inflation, mark then test at a lower known level of inflation and mark then keep the guage.
