1997 Cherokee XJ 4.0L

Been on this forum for a while now, got a new-to-me Jeep last winter and thought i would show you my to-date best one way trip reading.

Mods I have done:
Roof rack removal
Factory Up Country package with light weight 16" alloys
synthetics in diffs, synthetic oil, partial grill block (in winter)
Tuned up and running like OEM

I'm at 21 MPG average since owning the Jeep with a lot of that coming in the winter months of Colorado.

Cracking into the 20s in a Cherokee is good, breaking 25 is unheard of, especially with the effective but not especially thrifty 4.0 doing the motivating. This is amazing.

Wait...is there an uphill return journey we haven't seen yet?

Nice ride. Considering it's the sometimes-snowbound wasteland of Colorado, having a Cherokee for getting around after October is a must. Getting anywhere for better than 20mpg in one is great.

Yeah, this one way trip is a net 700 ft loss in elevation. It's back roads at 60 mph for 10 miles then Interstate at 70-75 for 10 miles. The return trip is 20 - 21.

Here is a pic as-is without the grill block installed.

I must strongly recommend a block heater for any 4.0L owners (which I have installed)...the Open Loop fuel maps are not very good for altitude driving.

I picked up a lower air dam from an S10 blazer that I will be installing soon. I'll let everyone know what effect it has.

Why 70-75 for 10 miles instead of 60-65 ?

I'm continuously running late to work on the way there and can't wait to be home when returning.

10 miles at 75 takes 8:00 minutes, at 65 it takes 9:13. At 60 it is 10 mins. I bet you lose more in local lights, traffic etc.

Just saying, not "having a go".

I've got a '95 Cherokee with the 4.0 and manual trans. Enjoy sharing economy ideas for these capable little trucks. I've replaced steel wheels (25.5 lbs ea.) with Jeep "ecco" aluminum wheels (19 lbs ea.) for look and less unsprung weight. Mostly I keep the speed down when driving this brick-like Jeep here in Colorado and get in the low 20s MPG, with my long time thrifty driving techniques.

A few VERY worthwhile upgrades in an XJ for better mileage:
- Ditch the mechanical fan for an electric fan. (Leave the factory electric fan in)
- Upgrade to 4 port injectors from various 4 cyl Chryslers (neon)

I have a Cherokee too!

why does every wanker keep on saying the wrong freaking injectors; neon injector are shorter and you end up modifying the bloody fuel rail.

3.3/3.8l v6 neon green injector out of a bloody caravan their 4 port and the right height
