2012 Mazda 3 40 mpgs hwy

i dont watch much tv but have been since im a little sick...noticed mazda advertising the mazda 3 at 40mpg's now thank to its "skyactiv" technology.

hopefully better economy will start to catch on more in the next few years. I just wish as most of you do as well, that companies would address aerodynamics more.

heres a link if your interested
2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv: 40 MPG Highway, No Electric Motor Needed (Page 2)

So now weve got the new focus, the elantra, the mazda 3, and i think the cruze all scraping the 40mpg EPA rating. What took so long?

I was looking for the gearing for the Mazda3 and I managed to find it. On the Mazda Canadia website.

Mazda3 gearing including the new Skyactiv 6spds

Those engines are just part of the mixture, besides the aerodynamics tweaks, and the special exhaust, they also put taller gearing in the MANUAL gearbox! Of all things. The auto is still a whopping 23% taller but still. At least they put a decent gear in it. With the 205/55/16 tires that means 2200RPM @ 60mph.

How is that a good tall gear? My car completely stock does 2100 RPM at 70 MPH.

For a 2.0L DOHC, 2.2k RPM @ 60MPH is a decent cruise gear.

Apple to Oranges.

I just bought a 2012 sky-active 6MT equipped Mz3.

First tank came out at 36.9mpg.

Beg pardon tru, but that is the same your 2l is getting. I assure you I am not heavy footed.

And this is in the mountains of North Georgia, not in pancake-flat Florida.

I expect things to improve some as it breaks in and I get the feel of the car, but if I get over 40mpg in my commute I will be more than happy.

Not sure how long this has been tru(e), but the new focus' are the same car underneath as the Mz3.

You can take Hyundai and Kia off of that list. Their EPA highway mileages have been reduced and the manufacturer is offering a rebate to cover the difference. I have no problem averaging 45 MPG in my 2011 Fiesta with the automated manual, but the wifes Sorento will not average as well as her previous Nissan Rogue, even though the highway rating is 5 MPG more on the Sorento. It has now been reduced from 32 to 30 MPG and the combined has dropped as well. There may even be a class action suit against Hyundai-Kia for the false mileage claims.

regards
Mech

Still basically the same chassis with some modifications but the engine and transmission are completely different for the Skyactiv models. The base engine and the 2.5L top level are still good old MZR engines with the MTX 5 speed.
