30 MPG SUV by GMC coming out this year

Jalopnik - 2010 GMC Terrain: Rugged Looks And 30 MPG - 2010 GMC Terrain

Good to see a more fuel friendly alternative for people that can't let go of their SUV.

Absolutely wonderful to see the bricks getting squarer with each generation.

A whole 30 mpg? Just what GM needs is another SUV in the lineup. Very ugly.

I'm a regular commenter on Jalopnik - or was until our IT guy figured out how to add filters to the new server, fortunately it hasn't latched onto this site yet - and one thing I've come to realize, everyone seems to revile the SUV but that hasn't stopped people buying them.

So if it gets 30mpg, good. At least then the fools who buy SUVs that don't need them may do somewhat less harm than otherwise.

Good point.

Still, I'd like to see them making much smaller vehicles that will get 50-60 mpg and STILL carry a lot of stuff. There's no reason why this can't be done. Lots of small and mid-size hatch vehicles these days could do it but are overpowered and also have "performance" gearing instead of FE gearing. Golf, Mazda 3, Scion small boxes, Focus wagon, etc. etc.

Shucks, my '89 Volvo wagon got me 25-30 mpg hypermiling (auto tranny, no lockup), and I'd guess it can carry more than the GM beast. Volvo's payload is 1200 lb! A dryer or refrigerator will fit in the cargo area - ya don't even need to drop the back seat for the dryer, if I recall.

Driving Lean Burn '97 Civic HX, lotsa mods by now! '89 Volvo 240 is semi-retired. I did love that car though!

Yeah I really don't understand why it couldn't look less like a box. Or more appropriately two boxes(engine and cab). If the front of the vehicle were sloped and the engine were lowered to allow less brick more Murcielago it would radically improve the FE at 50 mph let alone when they all speed at 80 mph.

GM definitely just needs to die quietly, instead of doing this flailing.

I'm impressed that they have done this... there's no stopping americans from wanting a "rugged looking vehicle to show people how large my cahones are... or my wife's when she's dropping the kids at school". I'd be interested to know what % of them will be 4cyl 2wd 30mpg vs the 6cyl 4wd ??mpg. Americans ALL need 4wd... never know when those wide long highways may have a pothole.

Gotta laugh at a stupid*** Suzuki t.v. commercial I saw recently. They have some lil AWD thing driving around with a cape, and when they mention the AWD they show one tire splashing through a lil pothole with some water in it. Yeah. AWD.
